‘People in Kashmir, Egypt both fighting for rights’

Comparing the situation in Kashmir with the one existing in Egypt, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said that despite the conditions being similar, people in India were no better off than Egypt: both peoples have to fight for their rights, be it democracy or self-determination.
“The people in Egypt were fighting for democracy and we are fighting despite being a democracy for the past 60 years,” she was quoted by Indian newspaper The Hindustan Times as telling reporters on Saturday at a press conference.
“I congratulate the people of Egypt for what they have achieved. But at the same time I appreciate the army of Egypt. They protected their people during this crisis,” she said.
Mehbooba criticised the government at the centre for not acknowledging the transition of people in Kashmir from “violence to peaceful protests.” “After 9/11 there was a transition in Kashmir from bullet to ballot but unfortunately central leadership ignored that transition,” she said.
Citing the differences in Egyptian and Kashmiri leadership, she also lashed at the state government. “When people came out in Egypt, nobody accused them of being one or the other. But here when people came out on roads demanding justice, our own government labelled them as Lashkar-e-Taiba, paid agents and now they are saying that thousands of youth pelting stones on the roads were drug addicts. The leadership is maligning its own people,” she said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded to the Mehbooba’s comments on social networking site Twitter. “She wants army rule in Kashmir as well since her party is in opposition,” Omar tweeted.

People in Egypt want the right to choose their govt. People in Kashmir already have the right, except on the Pakistani side where they have to live with military dictators often.

In a democracy people choose their govt, not their country.

Let the Coptic christians in Egypt demand a separate country because they have a different religion, then we will see the so called similarity unravel quite violently in Egypt.

Egypt has found its destiny by throwing out mubarak soon kashmiris too will find their destiny by throwing out colonial rule of delhi and its lackey. And all hoopla about kahmir elections being free and fair is just a eyewash.btw even during british colonial rule also there used to be elections in india.

I'm really interested in the manifest destiny of the copts, who are a separate nation because of a different religion.

When that happens, I'll agree to the comparison.

BTW, the only problem with the elections in kashmir is that the poor Kashmiri Pundits who have been ethnically cleansed can no more vote. I totally agree this issue must be dealt with severely.

Although I don't like comapring deaths and consider it untasteful because even a single life lost is one too many.

In the four months of civilian protests in 2010 in Kashmir around 112 people were killed over a the entire period of four months. This was also in the prescence of heavy stone pelting and also a number of arson incidents.

Compare this to Egypt where within two to three weeks 300+ people were killed and this despite the fact that those protesting were extremely disciplined and indulged in almost no violence whatsoever.

Or with Libya were in two weeks 100+ deaths have been reported, or Tunisia that had 50+ deaths in just 3 days of protests.

The other main thing is that Egyptians were waving the Egyptian flag when they were fighting for their rights and that is what made it so powerful. If Kashmiri sepratists wave the Indian flag and fight for their rights they will see the entire Indian population right behind them.

Yes. On the other hand I would like to see the 'peaceful' Egyptian response if the Egyptian Copts, who are a separate nation due to their faith, ask for a separate nation state. The similarity will rather violently fail, one can guess.

I know I repeat, but this is a kashmir thread, my pepetition is better than heady sloganeering.

God bless our Kashmiri bretheren, may Allah SWT continue to give them strength, resilience & persistence

Allahu Akbar

Gee, it is this exact sloganeering that has relegated this once political struggle to a movement of religious discrimination and intolerance.

But guess what this is actually strengthening the Indian position.

So please increase the decibel level a bit more.

what a stupid post. I am asking my Allah SWT to give them strength, resilience & persistence. Whether I mention it or not wont change the ground realities in Kashmir --which -- regardless of the brutal war being waged on them by the occupational forces (sissies) -- are still more in our favour and always have been.

Allahu Akbar = God is the Greatest. Which is something I say every morning, at lunch, at dinner and before I go to sleep --and not just when I post opinions or articles pertaing to Kashmir.

thanks for voicing your concerns; however they are baseless and unfounded.

regards.

Allahu Akbar. Kashmir Zindabad.

Kashmiris are lucky that the IA got there in time to protect them from the uncivilized barbarian Lashkars who were looting and raping them in 1948.

Else they would have fallen to Taliban by this time, no better than what is happening in Afghanistan.

These people have been their historical tormentors for hundreds of years. And now they claim to shed tears for them! Hypocrites.

Duh ! Whatever.

I find it strange when some tribals show more care for Indians than their own tribals being killed by Taliban on both sides of Durand.

That is what happens when you are fed a wrong version of history right from your formative years.

The tribal warriors quickly forgot the mission they were supposed to achieve, and succumbed prey to a vice deeply rooted in their culture and history — looting, pillaging and raping.

The uncivilized Lashkars were a major reason for the Kashmiris turning to India for saving them. The alienated the people with the loot, rapine and murders, the things they have been indulging in forever whenever they get a chance.

However, they ran very fast when the IA came after them. Faster than the IA could run after them. ;)

Even in 1965, the Kashmiris informed the IA and the IA routed the thousands of "commandos" who came for spreading terror among Kashmiris.

Those Kashmiris were the Bakerwals and Gujjars and even today they strongly support India so much so that a long standing Gujjar demand is to create a separate Gujjar regiment in the Indian Army. You can safely say that it is the religiously brainwashed folks from the Valley under the tutelage of the old man Geelani or the Hurriyat who engage in stone-throwing competitions or the Azaadi sloganeering or even better the Kashmir banega Pakistan rants.
