KARACHI - Pakistan, an agrarian economy, the agriculture sector of which not only employs majority of the rural population but also contributes around one–fourth to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), would turn into a water-scarce country within the next five years. “By 2017 Pakistan will turn into a water scarce country,” observed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) in its report titled “Guidelines for Efficient Agri-Water Management Finacing”.

Declining water per capita

The study has been conducted by a five-member team of the SBP’s Agricultural Credit and Microfinance Department with an aim to develop the agri-sector which is vital both for economic growth and poverty alleviation in the country.

Water scarcity is becoming a major issue in India too. The growth of population, climate change and improper planning is the root of problem. The water table is receding in northern state at alarming rate.
High time that we start applying innovative methods to tackle this.
Rain water harvesting, check dams etc are need or hour.

Government hah and what is that

I hope IK win the coming elections and set the Pakistan on proper track
whoever is in Govt must take action ..... it is not only Ik or zardari issue...... its the issue of whole nation and we cant delay this till elections.... Govt should act now before its too late

We need to work on this on war basis. We need to have extensive brainstorming on national level, look around in world, learn lessons from countries who have efficient water management systems and take measures enhance water effeciency. We should also plan to curtail flood water and use it positively.

Growing population is the biggest reason.

Unfortunately, This problem is in all South-Asian countries but I suppose biggest in Pakistan. One main reason behind is lack of Dams, when you don't save waste water, then water don't save you.

I agree.

However thinking of dams brings the thought of its construction and multiple years of time involved to build one big/medium one.

We need to start doing something about it very quickly. May be build small seepages to dispersed little natural reservoirs which can be built quickly. Or seepages to old dried up rivers which if still have capacity to store some amount of water.

We know path of flood from frequent previous experiences, we know the rivers which when swelled bring disasters. Why not enhance capacity of those rivers by building seepages, linking the rivers up with other natural reservoirs to make a gigantic dispersed capacity. This will help us to prevent the rivers from swelling and thus bringing catastrophe.

i grew up in jeddah , saudi arabia there we had jeddah desalination plant it takes water from the sea thus today saudi arabia has rain, forest, lakes, rivers, dam's the whole eco system has changed in there pakistan needs this if pakistan insha'Allah can get one then it will solve the water problem once & for all science & technology is in itˈself a miracle of GOD which he has given to the human mind the living e.g. are netherlands, japan, china etc

Pakistan is drowning in floods yet these people are talking about shortage of water..some logic that is! May God forbid politicians like Pakistan in the fate of any nation!

Also build water recycling facilities to treat sewage water and make it suitable for irrigation purpose..Sewage water high in Phosphates and Nitrates is very suitable for this purpose

Desalination plants are very expensive and use huge amounts of energy. It has to be the last option if nothing works out. The cost of desalination could be very high , and it would be transferred to the consumer .

Solar desalination...large mirrors heat up tubes installed at the sea side..the water evaporates and condenses on the down side causing a trickle of fresh water..thousands of tubes like these can product sevral cubic meter water everyday!

It is irony that one year we are drowned in water and in the next starve due to drought
