Global deaths of newborn babies remain alarmingly high, particularly among the world’s poorest countries, UNICEF said today in a new report on newborn mortality. Babies born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore have the best chance at survival, while newborns in Pakistan, the Central African Republic and Afghanistan face the worst odds.

“While we have more than halved the number of deaths among children under the age of five in the last quarter century, we have not made similar progress in ending deaths among children less than one month old,” said Henrietta H. Fore, UNICEF’s Executive Director. “Given that the majority of these deaths are preventable, clearly, we are failing the world’s poorest babies.”

Globally, in low-income countries, the average newborn mortality rate is 27 deaths per 1,000 births, the report says. In high-income countries, that rate is 3 deaths per 1,000. Newborns from the riskiest places to give birth are up to 50 times more likely to die than those from the safest places.

The report also notes that 8 of the 10 most dangerous places to be born are in sub-Saharan Africa, where pregnant women are much less likely to receive assistance during delivery due to poverty, conflict and weak institutions. If every country brought its newborn mortality rate down to the high-income average by 2030, 16 million lives could be saved.

Unequal shots at life
Highest newborn mortality rates*

1. Pakistan: 1 in 22
2. Central African Republic: 1 in 24
3. Afghanistan: 1 in 25
4. Somalia: 1 in 26
5. Lesotho: 1 in 26
6. Guinea-Bissau: 1 in 26
7. South Sudan: 1 in 26
8. Côte d'Ivoire: 1 in 27
9. Mali: 1 in 28
10. Chad: 1 in 28

Lowest newborn mortality rates*

1. Japan: 1 in 1,111
2. Iceland: 1 in 1,000
3. Singapore: 1 in 909
4. Finland: 1 in 833
5. Estonia: 1 in 769
=5. Slovenia: 1 in 769
7. Cyprus: 1 in 714
8. Belarus: 1 in 667
=8. Luxembourg: 1 in 667
=8. Norway: 1 in 667
=8. Republic of Korea: 1 in 667

* Note: Newborn mortality rates are estimates with uncertainty ranges. Rankings are based on median estimates of neonatal mortality rates (newborn deaths per 1,000 live births). They don’t account for uncertainties, and ranking positions are therefore subject to change. Rankings exclude countries with fewer than 1,000 live births or less than a population of 90,000.

More than 80 per cent of newborn deaths are due to prematurity, complications during birth or infections such as pneumonia and sepsis, the report says. These deaths can be prevented with access to well-trained midwives, along with proven solutions like clean water, disinfectants, breastfeeding within the first hour, skin-to-skin contact and good nutrition. However, a shortage of well-trained health workers and midwives means that thousands don’t receive the life-saving support they need to survive. For example, while in Norway there are 218 doctors, nurses and midwives to serve 10,000 people, that ratio is 1 per 10,000 in Somalia.

This needs to be looked at and measures should be taken to decrease our infant mortality rates FAST.

For a long time, Pakistan has neglected this issue.

What are some of the possible reasons for Pakistan's high infant mortality rates? Poverty alone can't explain it because sub-saharan African countries and india are significantly more poorer than us with much higher poverty rates. So what gives? Even within india, hindus have higher infant mortality rates than Muslims but Muslims are poorer than Hindus.

So what are some of the factors that cause high mortality rates other than poverty??

Anyone?

Probably lack of medical facilities, education in rural communities, and maybe a lack of nutrition during pregnancy?

Not really. As explained by AUz, many underdeveloped nations are doing better than Pakistan. How is this possible?
I can explain. It is a sickness, a terrible disease, the worst illness of all which has infected almost all of our politicians in the Islamic world. The scientific name of this social malady is IDGS. It is short for 'I don't give a sh*t'.

The agent is called Homo islamicus. It is resistant against at least two antibiotics of the standard therapy. It causes severe side effects to the nation concerned.

PM mentioned this issue in his first address to the nation.

No clean drinking water, no maternity care, no free health care, many people not doi g basic immunisation.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Pakistan's population growth rate would be even higher with a lower infant mortality.

How about killing terrorists and people who are abusing religion to achieve worldy goals instead of letting little helpless newborns die in agony?

I can show you millions in Pakistan of whom many are not only human garbage but also highly dangerous to the society and state.

These are just the logical consequences of the choices made by the State in order to serve its priorities where social development ranks quite low compared to other more important needs.

This is not about nationality. Do you think we don't have such human garbage in Turkey? You can recycle them, too, if you want to. The one time we could speak about Ummah - because this problem is a Ummah-wide phenomenon - you guys resort to nationalism.
Turkey's new born mortality rate is higher than Japan's. As long as this is the case, everything I say is a criticism of the current situation in Turkey, too.

Just read what that guy has said. Letting little babies die is a population control method for him. If you want to shrink the size of your population, kill those who put Pakistan in this situation in the first place. This was my argumentation.

What's wrong with this statement?

I do not think nationalism is Haraam.

Muslims are not united in one country.

Nationalism if meaning being loyal to your country and being patriotic, I believe that is part of Islam.

Anyone who says otherwise does not know what they are talking about.

The Pakistan government is 100% against terrorists. We are against those who take the law in their own hands.

That is not what I said. This is:

I am all for saving babies. If only the State thought way too and re-ordered its priorities. If only.

You have no idea how statistics work
But you are right on theme
Here us the summary though from same link

Notice the uncertainty in Pakistan data (lack of data recording)
So its very much possible that rate in Pakistan is 33 and that in India 28 per 1000
But its well known fact that india and Bangladesh are doing better than Pakistan
And important its important to point out that in absolute no. India is still worse than Pakistan

Ps
i worked in this field myseld and data gathering is so bad that we virtually have no idea but i doubt its much worse than india

In other words
0.648 million CHILDREN DIE IN india
The no. Is 8x higher than china(still developing country)

In other words HALF A MILLION children COULD BE SAVED EACH YEAR IF INDIA HESLTH JUST REACHES LEVEL OF CHINA

Not really. As explained by AUz, many underdeveloped nations are doing better than Pakistan. How is this possible?

Because in last 40 years tge govt of sharif ruled Pakistan which completely ignored health department
