Pakistan Taliban leader reported killed

The leader of the Pakistani Taliban, the militant movement that poses the gravest security threat to the country, was believed killed by a US drone strike, four Pakistan intelligence officials told Reuters on Sunday.

The officials said they intercepted wireless radio chatter between Taliban fighters detailing how Hakimullah Mehsud was killed while travelling in a convoy to a meeting in the North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border.

A senior military official told Reuters there was no official confirmation that the Pakistani state's deadliest enemy had been killed. The Pakistani Taliban issued a denial.

If Mr Mehsud has been killed it could ease pressure on security forces. They have struggled to weaken the group, which is close to al-Qaeda and has been blamed for many suicide bombings across one of the world's most unstable countries.

But it may not improve security in the long term in Pakistan, which is seen as critical for US efforts to fight global militancy, most importantly in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The death of Baitullah Mehsud, Hakimullah Mehsud’s predecessor, in a drone strike in 2009 raised false hopes that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) could be broken.

“Six to seven TTP members were talking to each other through wireless radio in the conversations we heard, talking about Hakimullah Mehsud being hit by a drone when he was heading to a meeting at a spot near Miranshah,” said one of the intelligence officials. “They referred to him by his code name.” Officials refused to disclose that code name.

“Based on our intercepts, Mehsud was heading to a meeting in Nawa Adda," said another intelligence official. Nawa Adda is a village in the Dattakhel area of North Waziristan.

The Pakistani Taliban said Hakimullah Mehsud was still alive but their denial was far less assertive than one issued in 2010 after media reports said he had been killed in a drone strike.

“There is no truth in reports about his death. However, he is a human being and can die any time. He is a holy warrior and we will wish him martyrdom,” TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan said.

“We will continue jihad if Hakimullah is alive or dead. There are so many lions in this jungle and one lion will replace another one to continue this noble mission.”

Don't really care one less scum to worry about. Must have been that drone attack the other day probably approved by PA HQ. Shows American only launch an attack with agreement of PA??

That was what I was saying the other day that people jumping ahead of the gun when the drones have also helped Pakistan in the past by targeting your enemies also.

Yea its the duplicity that I don't like. I am sure that Americans wouldn't take the mick as much as they have done in the past year without at least a tacit approval from PA

It's all just a murky business this 'war on terror' makes no sense to me, you will kill one terrorist and his children will continue the fight so was the point? it's better to educate the people so the kids stay in school rather then being groomed by the taliban.

See the poor parents can't afford to look after their kids (not their fault but the circumstances) so they think they doing the best for their kids by sending them to religious schools not saying all of them are the same but like that one in Karachi where the kids were chained by the ankles was really sick!

So was the solution? more investment in education etc and improving the economy should be number 1 goal for Pakistan

yea Pakistani that's the impression I got

So does the drone opperator get the Rs50 million?

I do wonder who tipped them off as to his location it was only a week ago reuters was saying either Rehman or Mehsud would be dead soon, perhaps the credit should go to some one in the TTP?

Hakimullah Mehsud, the head of the Pakistani Taliban, also known as the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and his deputy, Wali-ur-Rehman, were at each other’s throats, the sources said.

“You will soon hear that one of them has eliminated the other, though hectic efforts are going on by other commanders and common friends to resolve differences between the two,” one TTP commander said.
