Pakistan & Sri Lanka Seek Closer Military Ties
Pakistan Army Training and Evaluation Inspector General Muzammil Hussain yesterday held discussions with Sri Lanka Army Commander Jagath Jayasuriya on future military training and long-term defence courses.
The visiting military delegation, which is on a five-day visit to Sri Lanka, will visit the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Commando Regiment Training School and the Sri Lanka Military Academy.
At the meeting the two senior Army officers recalled the strong military ties and cooperation between the two countries since the 1960s and the uninterrupted exchange in military training.
The Pakistan Army has provided a number of training courses for Sri Lankan tri-service personnel at her various military training institutes. The programmes include War College Courses, Unit Command Courses of Infantry, Mid-career Courses of Signals, Young Officers Courses, Logistic Staff courses, Intelligence courses, and National Defence College courses.
Lieutenant General Jayasuriya said the Pakistan Army has been magnanimous in assisting Sri Lanka at all times by supplying military hardware and more importantly, by awarding more and more training opportunities for Sri Lankan Army officers in Pakistan.
He said both Pakistan and Sri Lanka needed to further enhance the potential for sharing of military knowledge and expertise, particularly in the face of emerging terrorist threats in some technically advanced countries.
