Pakistan spied on German officers in Afghanistan: paper

BERLIN: Pakistan’s secret service spied on German security forces in Afghanistan, raising fears sensitive information could end up in the hands of the Taliban, a German paper reported on Sunday.

Without citing its sources, mass-selling weekly Bild am Sonntag reported that Germany’s BND foreign intelligence agency warned its interior ministry that Pakistan had spied on 180 German police officers deployed in Afghanistan to train locals.

The interior ministry told Reuters the BND suspected a German email had been intercepted but could not give confirmation. The ministry added it was not aware of any comprehensive interception of German police data.

Pakistan’s interior and foreign ministries and military were unavailable for comment.

Bild am Sonntag said private telephone calls, messages to the ministry, military mission orders and lists of police officer names had been intercepted.

“On the basis of experience we must expect that the Pakistan intelligence agency ISI is continuing to give sensitive military information to the Taliban,” Bild cited an unnamed Berlin security expert as saying.

The BND declined to comment on the report.

The United States has long suspected Pakistan, or elements within the ISI, of supporting militant groups in order to increase its influence in Afghanistan, particularly after NATO troops leave in 2014.

Pakistan supported the Afghan Taliban before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. It was one of only three countries to have diplomatic relations with the Islamist group.

Citing security sources, Bild wrote that German police officers in Afghanistan have communicated in the past via non-secure means as they cost less.

“We have opened the floodgates to the enemy,” Bild cited a high-ranking Berlin ministry official as saying.

Bild said shortly after the BND warning and before a visit by the German president to Afghanistan, the German police mission was equipped with brand new laptops with the latest software for secure communication.

The interior ministry confirmed the police laptops and broadcasting technology were tested and equipped with new software between Sept.13 and 23. A spokesman said this was a regular I.T.-checkup and was not linked to the spying claim.

Why give it to the Taliban?

If the ISI was in fact intercepting it, it would be doing so to better understand German/ISAF operations in Afghanistan and to learn from them and ensure that Pakistani national interests were not being damaged.

Come On, you should understand. Today world have Pakistan phobia, just like they have Soviet phobia or any other phobia in the past. Any thing related to Pakistan will be related to them by foriegn media.

Now the Germans also are making accusations. Some in denial will also call this a conspiracy but will not use a logic why everyone is doing it.
Actually the ones in denial and clinging to conspiracy theories and paranoia about the 'ISI behind every rock in Afghanistan' are the ones buying this Western media BS without trying to see if any of that BS is substantiated and/or supported with facts and evidence.

Western Establishment media propaganda at its peak.

Apparently enough Muslims have not been killed in Western invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq and attacks on Pakistan.

Actually the one's calling it a conspiracy are the bharatis and whatever westerners, i.e. you and them are the conspiracy theorists and the ones in denial!

I guess the German BND has started working under Pentagon too. its realli ridiculous to do claims like that...what Pakistan is going to benefit from this crap. We are the vitims of this evil war and want to get peace by anyway. We want to help all the people in our neighbors to maintain peace at all the times but they are sacred of their own shadow. They started watching horrible wet dreams lately. I don't know how we can help them out...

Sir! U might be right but I guess Pakistan don't have any reason to intercept anybody's personal information. its just their speculation. They shold keep trust within their allys in order to maintain peace within the region...:smokin:

The whole World does not have Pakistan Phobia, but it does seem to have an "ISIPHOBIA". ISI is a Ubiquitous all powerful crime syndicate that is responsible for anything terrible that occurs on planet Earth, haha.

Our 'allies' don't trust Pakistan, provide safe havens to TTP terrorists in Eastern Afghanistan, and Baluch terrorists in Kabul - they carry out illegal and unsanctioned raids in Pakistan, hide intelligence from Pakistan despite Pakistan sharing intelligence with them.

Why should Pakistan not intercept information from ISAF?

You can be sure ISAF is doing the same with Pakistan.

If they do not have evidences then why they accuse you? Why don't they accuse somebody else for a change?

If they do not have evidences then why they accuse you? Why don't they accuse somebody else for a change?
If they have hard evidence, why don't they present it in the same shows they broadcast?

It is the responsibility of the accuser to establish and prove guilt - so where is the evidence supporting these allegations by the accuser?

We heard all this nonsense in the US media about 'US has evidence ISI supported Haqqani attacks against US', and when Clinton visited Pakistan and was asked this directly, she said the US had no evidence.

Same drama and BS here.
