Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said the country wants to be a full-fledged member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the potential of which is growing.
“The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is playing an ever-growing role, especially in the area of regional security,” he said in Tehran. “That is why Pakistan is taking an active part in its work even in the status of observer.”
“The next SCO summit due in September in Dushanbe is expected to adopt admission rules for new members, so we will exert more efforts to further our application for full-fledged membership,” Aziz noted.
Since many states of the region were SCO members, it could play an important role in securing peace and stability in Afghanistan.

A quick question from someone from a different part of the world regarding this type of emerging security alliance: I get the feeling that Asian countries do not trust each other the same as say a US/Canada/Britain/France/etc "Western" type bloc.

Does it only seem like that since most conversations on a defense board happen to turn confrontational, or is there some sort of cultural difference that holds back the possible security alliances in that region?

really? some thousand years of war between euro nations but we are the people that don't trust each other?

America is the undisputed number one in the Western world, and the world really. There won't be any conflict because it's stupid when the difference is that huge.

China isn't accepted right now and that's why we are facing so much trouble. Many Filipinos think they can win against us, whether that's true or not I'll let you decide.

As soon as we are accepted for what we are, a rising great power, there would be no more of this "mistrust" if you will.

But overall, China has good relations with most of our neighbours to the West, including Russia. This supposed mistrust between China and Russia is not real, at least not while US still reign supreme.

It's really just Japan, Philippines, and Vietnam. Malaysia a little bit. I mean when did these four countries represent the world or Asia. As to India, it's more of a rival thing, if Indian members here backed down, I be disappointed about the future of India.

In this age of globalism every country in the globe trades with and invests in every other country. As we always have something to buy or sell from each other and money to invest to make profit.

But when it comes to military alliances or formal regional unions of nations, these are exclusive clubs of nations who have more in common within their group or have a common threat perception. Examples:
Military Alliance: NATO and NATO partners
Regional Union: EU, early in formation (ASEAN, EaEU, Arab League, African Union, UNASUR/Latin American Union etc.)

There are close economic cooperation among members of a Union and usually they are part of the same military alliance as well, but vice versa is not true, for example - Turkey is a member of NATO military alliance but not a member of EU.

NATO and NATO partners are not the last military alliance in the world, I believe there will be others. In a few decades, I think China will lead another military alliance. When that alliance takes shape, things will become clear about where everyone belongs.

Long term future possibilities:
SCO military alliance that may include the following possible unions:
- North East Asian Union (China+Japan+Korea's+Mongolia)
- EaEU (Eurasian Economic Union, former Soviet countries, except for the ones that join EU/NATO)
- ASEAN+Bangladesh+Sri Lanka
- West Asian Union (Turkey+Iran+Pakistan+Afghanistan+Shia 3rd of Iraq+Kurdish part of Iraq)

Current NATO and NATO partners:

If and when the new SCO alliance takes shape, over some years and decades, I think many existing NATO partners will join this new alliance. A di-polar world will thus come into being.

Yes I have seen this.

Question is, if Russia backs us

Then who is stopping?

China? naah ray naah. how is that possible. higher than himalaya brother hood.

must be the those pesky members like Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan who are voting us down.

SCO membership: Pakistan’s bid gains Chinese support – The Express Tribune

Something concrete might come after this SCO meeting in i guess September for which Pakistan has an invite.

SCO is mainly an economic/energy/transit alliance than an Asian NATO. The security aspect of SCO is focused on joint efforts against terrorism and narco trade.

Got it, thanks. Well those things you listed are the basis of defense cooperation, since those interests lining up with each other can bring different countries very close together.

Asians don't have a history of Pan Asia wars. I hope we learned from the both WWs.

Having said this, i'd not be supportive of an 'Asian NATO', as it actually increases the risk of a world war none of us will live to see end.

You are 100% correct ,china is a rival and not enemy.Every country need some target to achieve prosperity.

China is seen like if they can do it then why can't we, so basically we see china as competitor and trust me we do respect Chinese people and don't take PDF Indians views as nation as a whole.
