Pakistan & Iran to discuss bilateral ties
Pakistani Senate Chairman Farooq Naek says Islamabad attaches great importance to its political, economic, and cultural relations with Iran and is seeking to deepen bilateral ties on multiple fronts.
"Pakistan values its political, economic, and cultural ties with Iran and is strongly committed to deepen them," IRNA quoted Naek as saying during a meeting in Islamabad with Iran's deputy foreign minister for Asia and Oceania Affairs, Mohammad Ali Fathollahi.
"We are satisfied at the steady growth in our bilateral trade, which has reached nearly $1 billion per annum but, it is far below the potential of our two countries," a Senate Secretariat statement quoted Naek as saying following the meeting.
The Pakistani senator also stated that Islamabad has a vision of establishing trade and energy corridors in the region, and noted that there are tremendous opportunities for trade and investment in the Islamic Republic, particularly in the oil and gas sectors.
Naek also highlighted the strong bonds of friendship and brotherhood between the people of the two nations.
"We are bound together by centuries of history, culture, and religion, which will be strengthened with the passage of time," he noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Naek stated that Pakistan is against terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations.
"We have lost thousands of innocent civilians and valiant personnel of the armed forces. Terrorism has badly affected our economy and day-to-day lives," he added.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister said that the close and cordial relations between the two countries will be enhanced with the passage of time.
Fathollahi arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday to attend a meeting of a consultative political committee.
