US energy giant also eyeing investment in Pakistan’s LNG sector

ISLAMABAD: US energy giant ExxonMobil has expressed interest in drilling more offshore blocks in search for hydrocarbon reserves and is also looking to make investment in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector in Pakistan.

At present, ExxonMobil is drilling an offshore well namely Kekra-I as part of a joint venture with Italy’s Eni, Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL).

In a meeting with Federal Minister for Petroleum Division Omar Ayub Khan on Tuesday, a delegation of ExxonMobil said they were optimistic that energy resources would be discovered at Kekra-I. The delegation was headed by ExxonMobil LNG Market Development Chairman Alex Volkov.

ExxonMobil President Irtiza Syed briefed the minister and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar about offshore drilling, saying Eni and ExxonMobil had started work on Kekra-I in January 2019.

He revealed that ExxonMobil was interested in drilling more offshore blocks and in LNG business. Apart from this, ExxonMobil could help Pakistan in framing an environment-friendly policy for offshore drilling.

The minister said Pakistan government would provide all assistance to international investors, adding that after completion of exploration work on Kekra-I, employment would be generated.

The joint venture is drilling Kekra-I well in ultra-deep waters in the Indus-G block. The well will be drilled up to the depth of 5,660 metres and the joint venture has so far reached the depth of 4,810 metres. The drilling has entered the phase where oil and gas deposits

can be estimated.

The entry of ExxonMobil into Pakistan is a positive signal for the exploration and production sector of the country. The Petroleum Division has drafted Pakistan Offshore (Exploration and Production) Rules 2019 and Model Production Sharing Agreement 2019, which will be sent to the cabinet for approval.

In a bid to woo foreign investors, the government has waived duties and taxes on the import of drilling equipment.

The ExxonMobil delegation also met President Arif Alvi at Aiwan-e-Sadr, who was briefed about the company’s ongoing and future investment projects in Pakistan.

The president appreciated ExxonMobil’s entry into the LNG business and encouraged the company to make further investment in the upstream petroleum sector by taking benefit of the liberal foreign investment policy of Pakistan.

The president also underlined the need for collaboration between foreign investors and local partners by forging joint ventures.

Lahore (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 30th April, 2019) The chairman of ExxonMobil, the company drilling in the Arabian Sea to discover oil and gasreserves, reached Islamabad with a report regarding the update of drilling process.

The ExxonMobil delegation also called on Petroleum Minister Omar Ayub and Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi in Islamabad on Tuesday.

ExxonMobil chairman Alex Volkov, along with his team, held productive discussions with the ministers relating to LNG requirements in Pakistan and the offshore drilling project off the coast of Karachi.

Petroleum Minister Omar Ayub said that the government will fully facilitate foreign investors in the country. He said that many employment opportunities will be generated after exploration of energy resources in Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Special Assistant for Petroleum Nadeem Babar said there are bright chances of energy resources from Kekra-I in the sea.

He said the government will fully cooperate for independent and secured investment in the country.

The ExxonMobil chairman is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan. He will apprise him of the outcomes of drilling process currently underway at Karachi sea.

Pakistan found signs of success in the ongoing oil and gas drilling in the deep sea. The details suggest that a kick pressure was felt during the ultra-deep drilling in Kekra-1 area of the Arabian Sea. The kick pressure means presence of huge gasreserves.

It is anticipated that gas discovery will yield gas flows which can be bigger than Sui field.

Let it be known that 3000-meter drilling has been completed so far in the sea and will continue to over 4000 meters. PakistanPetroleum (PPL), Oil & Gas Development Co (OGDCL), ENI and ExxonMobil are carrying out the drilling.

What fraud please enlightened us with your great vision.

As far as I know these drilling paid by companies and not by govt.

bhai ye ummat akhbaar wali party ha .ya urdupoint wali.
I really don't understand their mentality. If we don't drill or extract the resources out by sometime these resources will be depleted automatically and we will have nothing. But yeah don't ask foreign company they will keep our resources blah blah and keep asking IMF for money and burden the nation.

Pakistan needs to invite non American companies, Russian and Chinese, and give them contracts as well.

The recent utterance of Alice Wells where she completely ignored the proven Indian sponsored terrorism in Pakistan, I am afraid the deals are done with geopolitics in mind.

Exxon Mobil is not the operator of the block. Hence they are not drilling any offshore well.

They do not have any offshore block as operator in Pakistan therefore they can not drill any well.

They need to get a block to drill a well.

That bitch Alice turns up once in a while.

I think it is a very good idea to get Russians and Chinese involved in drilling.

Shale oil & gas can be extracted with much less upfront capital costs and can start producing much faster. USA oil companies are experts in extracting energy from shale. We should seek their assistance in this as well as offshore oil.
