ISLAMABAD - In a major diplomatic success for Pakistan, the Afghan government and the Taliban have agreed for peace talks, officials said on Tuesday.

The development came after this week’s “productive meetings” between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the Afghan leadership including President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul.

Pakistan had convinced both the sides to hold talks for the sake of peace in the country and the region, The Nation has reported.

“It’s a huge success for Pakistan. We don’t know when the talks will be formally held but they have taken a step forward. They (the Afghan government and the Taliban) have agreed for peace talks. They will discuss terms and conditions in the coming days,” said one official.

Another official said Pakistan deserved a credit for ‘concrete steps’ for the peace process in Afghanistan. “It’s good that Afghanistan is also acknowledging our efforts,” he remarked.

After the meeting with Afghan leaders on December 24, Foreign Minister Qureshi had said he had “productive meetings” over the peace process with the Taliban.

“I’ve had productive meetings with the Afghan leadership this morning,” Qureshi wrote on Twitter. “The peace process is making positive headway.”

Qureshi met Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and President Ashraf Ghani in the first stop of his three-day tour of four countries which also included Iran, China, and Russia. He had completed talks with the Chinese counterpart yesterday and will fly to Russia for more talks in Moscow.

Salahuddin Rabbani said on Twitter that he discussed “issues of great importance” with Qureshi.

Earlier, the Taliban had refused to enter into dialogue with the Afghan government’s representatives. However, ‘acknowledging’ Pakistan’s diplomatic move, they have ‘conditionally’ agreed to negotiate with the government.

The Taliban have asked for establishment of caretaker government and the formulation of a committee, in which representatives from their side would put forward their perspective of the setup. Besides, they have asked for an immediate release of some of their prominent leaders. The dialogue process is expected to progress after a response from the Afghan government.

How much are we getting for playing peace brokers or its a free lunch for the yankees as usual?

Coz the obl experience didn't sit quite well with us when we made Barack Obama win the presidency for the second term .

There was this hope of securing business deals with the rest of the world when the then prime Minister Yousaf Reza made a victory statement about assasinating Osama in a joint military operation but our Generals spoiled the pie royally.

China pressurised Afghanistan over reconciliation with Pakistan: US DoD Report

WASHINGTON - A US department of defence report notes that Afghanistan “continues to seek Chinese pressure on Pakistan” to assist reconciliation efforts and eliminate insurgent sanctuaries.

Afghanistan to train a mountain brigade in China to patrol the Wakhan Corridor, which borders China’s Xinjiang Province. China is concerned that Uighur militants transiting through the Wakhan Corridor could pose a threat to Chinese interests in the region.

The United States views China’s concern about the growth of militancy as a positive element, which could encourage Beijing to work with the international community to suppress terrorism in the South Asian region.

The Pentagon also recognises Iran’s influence in Afghanistan , claiming that Tehran pursues “a multitrack strategy” of engaging and trying to grow ties with the Afghan government, expanding trade and economic investments, and “providing calibrated support to the Taliban while trying not to alienate Kabul”.

While all this is going on, with Pakistan, Afghans, Iranians, Chinese, Russians, Americans involved but no sign of Indians. Mmmmm oh yeh they are busy building Chah Bahar port ... hahahahaha !

Geography is a b*tch I hear Indians mutter.

Don't worry one day they will export all those indian products that Russia and Central Asia are desperate to have all through Chabahar and Taliban held southern Afghanistan

Seems the initiative of Imran khan is working.
Because General Bajwa and Us has these talks several times. Even taliban afghan government also sat down. But things have gone no where.
Only difference between the talks that happened before and now is pm Imran khan, every other character is same: trump, ashraf ghani, general Bajwa, other actors..
The meeting of taliban and haqqani with Saudi Arabia and dubai has been good.
Only that's why they are pulling half the troops..
Even now taliban agreed to talk to ashraf ghani government for the setup of caretaker government.
The only problem remains is the presence of individual actors that can subotage this.
Well if peace could be achieved, it is nothing less then a miracle.
The US has lower their tone.
The afghans have lower their tone..
The taliban have seen pm Imran continuous support for talks and peace they are more willing to talk to him as he has been telling the west since last decade that you cannot kill the taliban, the only solution is talks .
If he can achieve this miracle, it would be his biggest contribution to the world .

You cannot out rule the importance of timing. You made a good point, US has recognized that Imran Khan is never going to compromise on National interests of Pakistan and he is the only one who has been against WOT since day one. US waited for the elections to get done, they were hoping against hope that NS might win or might be part of coalition government and US could pressurize that weak government, unfortunately for them PTI won with clear majority.

I would be honest , India has only be used in Afghanistan to pressurize Pakistan. India had no role from the start. The few million dollars that India spend, could have come from any pocket in the world. US has now realized that india cant deliver simply because they have no strategic depth. They have no common borders. India utilized the opportunity to propagate Baloch nationalism in Pakistan by training misguided Baloch youth through Afghan soil, all of that has now come to an end. While India was happy in what they were doing, Pakistan used India as an excuse to continue supporting Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network for what they called "protecting long term Pakistani interest in the region". Last 15 year has been painful for Pakistan but I suppose they read the script very well and is going to be only country in the region who would benefit from US with drawl.
