Estimates of National Family Health survey has hinted that around 15 million people in India suffer from severe mental disorders and almost 30 million from mild or moderate psychiatric problems.
To address these problems the government has launched National Mental Health Programme in 1996 in four districts as a pilot project.
Today the programme covers 123 districts under the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) and has been expanded to include the up-gradation of psychiatry departments of Government Medical Colleges, general hospitals and modernisation of State run Mental Hospitals.
