Anyone from Karachi may please throw some light. The figures seems absurdly high.

Over 2,500 kids went missing in Karachi last year
Sun, Nov 21 11:09 AM

Karachi, Nov 21 (IANS) More than 2,500 children were reported as missing in Karachi last year, an NGO has revealed.

Roshni Helpline, an NGO that deals with childrens' rights, said that as many as 2,582 children went missing in Karachi and these figures don't include the many disappearances that are not reported by their families.

'Our research reveals that Pakistan does not have any national or provincial data on missing children, let alone proper guidelines to investigate such cases,' Express Tribune Sunday quoted Roshni Helpline president Muhammad Ali as saying.

'We visited a hundred police stations across the city over a period of several months, where it was revealed that 2,582 complaints were registered in 2009. I am sure the

national figures would be even higher.'

Of the missing kids, 2,319 were boys and 263 were girls.

Statistics show that 78 percent of the missing children belonged to the age group of 12 years to 18 years while the remaining 22 percent were younger than 12 years.

The chief causes for children running away from their homes was physical, sexual and emotional abuse at home and at school coupled with economic and financial hardships faced by their families, the media report said.

The NGO said around 80 percent of the children who went missing belonged to the middle or lower socio-economic structure of society.

Ali said the government needs to 'own this issue' and take responsibility to effectively tackle it by compelling the police to take up investigations on a priority basis.

How do you Indians have so much time on your hands? You guys search for hours to find negative news about Pakistan and then post it here. You think were going to go into depression or something by seeing negative news which might not even be true?
This is severe obsession for Pakistan at it's best. We parted our ways in 1947 so please move on.
And all of us know that child kidnappings are much more worse in India.

^^^ Mr Aashiq,

Leave stereotyping and useless comments aside if you have nothing else to say.

If you see my last two posts apart from this one.. one was about India's losses due tax evasion, crime & corruption & the other about U.S. bars Palestinian statehood moves in U.N.

.. Does now Indian poster should label me as obsessive with India or should the Israelis label me as obsessed with Israel?

This is a current social problem, does not have to be within any national boundary. Similar problem is prevailing in India as well.. We want to discuss the social evil... be it in India or in Pakistan or anywhere else..

If you have anything to discuss about the problem, then comment, other wise lay off please.

I Second this. The amount of negative news posted by Indian members on PDF is becoming annoying. And it is a open fact that this leads to flame wars and trolling. Why start if your intentions are to have peaceful and insightful debates.

Pakistan has plenty of good news every day, why not ask about that?

Dear Paladin and Ashiq and other like minded fellow posters,

First of all let me apologise for touching a wrong cord with this thread. However, I must make myself clear here that my intention was not to highlight the negative points of Pakistan. I have the habbit of going through yahoo asia news and somehow this bit caught my eye and thought people will like to discuss the same as a social problem, not only in Pakistan, but also elsewhere including India. Whether you believe me or not does not matter. But my consience is clear here. You may check my posting history for any trend in Pakistan bashing from my side.

Anyways, since this has not sit well with you guys, I request Mods to kindly delete the thread.

Apologies once again.

Replace Pakistani's with Indians you are no different. The problem is you enjoy when news is about India. I have seen 3 threads opened same day for Hindu terrorism. Hypocrites including some mods you will easily generalize Indians but Ignore fellow countrymen.

I hv make it a habbit now, one bashing thread against Pakistan, and i will open a counter thread, there are lot of news about india on the net aswell, my last two three threads are examples.

Its sad that we see such a situation.

Its time we should have an affective social security system in place if not a perfect one but atleast something that could mitigate financial issues to some extent.

2.Change in corporal punishment practice at schools (this practice is one of the main factors for running away of children).

3. Change in typical police investigation system. They must be made more responsible.

4. form more organisations for looking for these runaway kids. Edhi Center is playing a great role by finding such kids and uniting them with their family.

I agree that some Indians go an a Pakistan bashing spree (and also the other way round) but hembo is one of the more reasonable posters.

Anyway, on topic, as Jana said, we need more resources dedicated to the welfare of minors. A separate legal stream for crimes against minors, and better child welfare system. Maybe child sanctuaries in mosques.

Reuniting may not always be the best solution, especially if they are running away because of abuse at home.
