From what I know the MEK were responsible for the the executions and they were behind the taking of the US embassy. At the beginning they helped Khomeini to suppress any opposition before they had disagreements with him. According to Iranian historian the executions were so high in the beginning of the Islamic regime was because of MEK infiltrators.

Yeah, These mujahids are a Marxist-Islamist group, Now i don't know about you but i think anyone who manages to mix Islamism and Marxism together is a little fvcked in the head. They were an active armed insurgent group during Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's rule and did some political killings. Their object was to overthrow him and establish an Islamist-socialists revolutionary government in Iran, And many say they were the main revolutionary group in the streets during the revelation. Sadly the late shah had a little lacking in the balls department so he didn't get rid of these monkeys for good, This eventually became his downfall. After the revolution they and clergies were together at first, But eventually there was a rift between them. After that they went back to armed insurgency and started doing political assassinations and bombings again but this time these fvckers got the short end of stick (for good).
