Okinawa vote a blow to Japan-U.S. ties

That's the issue. As the US Military Base in Okinawa employs some 10,000 Japanese citizens, and generates $2 Billion for the local economy. Basically it accounts for about 5% of the entire prefecture's economy. That's quite a sizable amount, provided that these employees are paid in US Dollars and in US Standard.

If they close the Futenma Base, that means over 10,000 Japanese will become unemployed.

How about our PLA to hire them in the future. :cheesy:

Alternatively, the base kills the options of creating viable industries for Okinawans. What the US military brings to Okinawa is a service industry designed to cater the needs of the foreign military -- pubs, night clubs, and all that. That's a disgrace for a country as developed as Japan to let Okinawan economy be US-military dependent.

If the US military is kicked out, I am sure, Okinawa will have the room to develop indigenous and more legitimate industries.

The most likely thing that will happen is that an alternative site will be agreed upon, and as per the issue of the Futenma Base, most likely the facility will become part of a forward military base of the JGSDF's Western Army Command. Responsibilities will be assumed by Japanese Military.

Yes, I agree. Okinawa, despite being a small prefecture has an economy that is about $45 Billion. Imagine, such a small prefecture of only some 1.5 million has an economy that is greater than Cambodia, Laos and Brunei ...COMBINED. :-)

In the event the United States Military is asked to leave Okinawa, I am sure that the JSDF and its branches can assume all military command and protection of the prefecture. Lastly, if the JGSDF, JMSDF assumes operational control of the US base, those some 10,000 Japanese civilians will retain their jobs.

But who will assume the cost to build a new base?

Would do the US agree to place its troops under a Japanese commander?

And, with this new governor, do you think further restrictions will be placed on the movement of US potentially dangerous military-man in Okinawa?

The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force's Western Army Command will take operational command of the Futenma Base.
The JMSDF's 1st Escort Fleet will most probably take operational command of all naval operations in around the Okinawa region.

Are you serious? :o: to add insult to injury, do they have to provide women as package deal??
