The Hindu Business Line : DRDO tests tech to predict flight failure
Bangalore, Oct. 29
The Aeronautical Development Establishment has reported successful trial of its breakthrough technology that monitors the health of planes and flying objects online even as they are in flight.
Using flight data, it also predicts failures and problems that aircraft may develop, so that corrective action may be taken in time.
The technology, Structural Health Monitoring, will avoid needless grounding of aircraft for inspections, according to a DRDO release. Developed by the ADE and civil laboratory National Aerospace Labs, it was tested in the Nishant indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle at the Kolar airfield on Thursday.
The health monitor can be used on the fighter planes - the light and medium combat aircraft, the fifth generation fighter and various UAVs, ADE said. Such techniques are going to be extensively used in the future in order to cut down the operational costs of the aircraft and can also lead to reduction in air fares. [They] can prevent flights from danger by pre-warning of the occurrence of failure.
