Name one person in famous groups who either didn't fit in or was completely superfluous -- the group would function just as well without them. Yes, I know it's subjective...

Ringo Starr in the Beatles.

Ross (David Schwimmer) in Friends.

Elaine (Julia Louis Dreyfuss) in Seinfeld.

I just don't get it.All of them seem indispensible.

Ringo Starr was with the Beatles from almost the beginning. He was not only the drummer, but also the lead singer in a number of songs.

Friends is so incomplete without David Schwimmer!!!

Julia Louis Dreyfuss got an Emmy for her role in Seinfeld I think,if I am not mistaken....

McCartney and Lennon were the primary writers and singers. Harrison and Starr were secondary, and Harrison at least proved himself with a solo career post-Beatles.

Ross was completely the odd man out in Friends. He did not have the looks or personality to fit in with the others and was there only as Monica's little dorky brother.

Elaine's Emmies are a joke, considering her unbelievably ridiculous overacting makes William Shatner (Captain Kirk) look like a real actor. I would say that George and Kramer made the show. Even Seinfeld himself was useful primarily as a glue between these characters.

Just my personal opinions, obviously...

Interesting opinions indeed. But then ,going by your opinion, all of them are kind of odd one out, isnt it??I was actually trying to find one.

BTW,have you seen David Schwimmer in "Band of Brothers"???

His character there is so much different than what is in Friends.

I mean its like when you watch a character in a particular show for a long time, then you make a kind of mental profile of that character. Then all of a sudden when you see that actor in an entirely different role then it really moves you......

Look at it this way.

If you took Paul or John out, the Beatles simply would not be the same. As for the other two, it is debatable, especially Ringo. I think the Beatles would have been the same if you replaced Ringo with a generic drummer.

Same for Elaine in Seinfeld. Her character was totally superfluous and didn't really add to the chemistry.

Ross was more integrated into the story line of Friends so perhaps the criticism doesn't apply, but his character was also very generic: the dorky guy who gets the hot chick. He played a similar character earlier in The Wonder Years.

I disagree. Take anyone out from Sienfield and it still makes sense. Thats because the sitcom had NO story whatsoever. It was just a mishmash of everyday eventualities. But then the character portrayed by Dreyfuss was so in tune with this nothingness, that its really difficult to visualize Elaine NOT being there.

As for friends, I consider it a chick 'TV flicks' of sorts. It had its charm, and all the characters were central to the plot. Everyone in there was an odd man out. So Ross is no different than others.

That was about the characters. Now if you are talking about the actors, then there is no one who can portray Elaine so magnificently as Dreyfuss did. Cannot say the same about Ross though.

ohh..okay..I get it..You are thinking on the line who is absolutely indispensable and who is playing more of a side role.Well, from that point of view, you are right and I agree with you.

But you must understand that the side roles are also important indeed.Friends is all about friends!!!And you have all kinds of people among a group of friends.Had there been some other character like Ross, who plays his role better than Ross, then ,may be he would not have been that much necessary. But there is none!!!So that makes Ross necessary.....

Not really. George and Kramer were central to the series. Take either of them out and the series just isn't the same. Jerry played the 'everyday' straight man and was an essential glue between George and Kramer because, by themselves, they would never hang out together. Elaine was completely superfluous. Her character served absolutely no purpose and is not memorable in any way.

To be honest, I only watched the first season of Friends and then lost interest. I only know some of the later storyline secondhand through friends...

I found her acting to be one of the worst I have ever seen. Unbelievably bad overacting!
