I seriously doubt thats the case. He is just trying to nudge the Palestinians to a different direction away from General Assembly. They pretty much gave up on any U.S brokered solution. What Obama is saying doesn't make much sense. There hasn't been any progress in last ten years, If Mubarak is a relic of history, Nato bombing Gaddafi, sure something can be worked out.

I will be surprised if the Palestinians buys what he is selling.

the usa will never give up on israel..but the close regimes and instability in the ME cost too much..democratic us-friendly governments and stability in the region is the goal..in order to achieve that they have to limit israeli lunacy.

the US is not completely ditching Israel but it is slapping it around as a show for the Arabs. This can't be seen in isolation from Arab spring. America see an oppotunity to influence the future course of the Mediterranean middle east (Egypt, Tunisia, Eastern Libya etc) and they seem to think it is too good an oppotunity to pass up.

I've always been of the opinion that Isreal has manipulated America into seeing Israel's interests as America's interests (aided fundamental Christians) and that it's had a disastrous effect on US policy in the region.

i agree with those scholars..the thing is,shall usa go down with israel or do what they have to do...blind support for israel costs more and more..i think in the long run,they will get israel sober..they have to.

Back to the topic: I think Obama is cashing-in the political capital he earned after the OBL raid. Yet it remains to be see if he can actually push for a solution or this is one more ploy to stop the UN GA recognition of Palestine in September this year. AIPAC is in battle gears and election campaign in America is starting.

I don't think Israel is "going down" and taking America "down with it", just that it is hijacking American sympathy to accomplish its selfish strategic goals. I don't use the word selfish to pass judgement but to mean strategic goals independent of the US.

All the denial aside, I think there is an unofficial policy of expanding the Israeli state, of allowing settlers to edge out Palestinian neighbourhoods. This kind of expansion is very hard to address or check, since the state has a plausible case for deniability and the west tends to respect the individuals freedoms very strongly and this extends to include the right for private citizens to purchase land. What happens years after these purchase is, the Israeli government can justifiably say that these neighbourhoods have a Jewish settler majority and therefore should become a part of the Israeli state.

Yes, you got it right.
But for how long the Israelis will keep gobbling up the land? Palestinians are not going anywhere. In fact, they are determined to breed like rabbit in the West Bank and create their own 'ground reality'. How long more before the Palestinian population becomes way too large to manage, the smuggled arms become too sophisticated for the IDF counter-measures, and the world sick and tired of the Israeli machinations? How many hundreds of years the suggested Israeli Bantustants or Apartheids can last?
Today Israeli main weapon is not the IDF. It is the control of the American Congress. The NY Times article I posted above shows how Netanyahu is trying to counter Obama administrator by using the Congress. Pretty low and desperate. May even backfire.
Anyway, the world peace is held hostage by not the ordinary Israelis who, in significant numbers, would like to pull back to the 1967 lines. But by the religious fanatics of the 'Settler Enterprise' whose heads are the Likudniks and AIPAC.

It won't back fire in my opinion. If the Obama plan dies, it will die by congress's hand. Not that Obama probably minds too much, because even if it fails, he can claim that he tried his best and ride some of that good will in the Arab world.

This is a helluva an interesting game being played in the ME right now.

I don't understand these people. They're wishing with all their might that the world ends, and everyone else dies (including the Jews funnily enough since they are just one of the 'signs' of the apocalypse and not destined to be saved themselves).
