Nuclear power plant deal signed with Russia

I read somewhere that a great leader will lead his people not being lead by them.

Who says she is a leader ?

she is a politician and a populist to the core..
People do not understand long term gains and the sacrifices that has to be made for it

A politician who is a visionary understands it and manages the situation

That is how a plotician becomes a leader..
A leader is visionary

The same can be said about Kerala. Because of high concentration of population, Kerala also has high concentration of vehicles and as a result high rate of accidents. In 2010 alone we lost 4000 people to road accidents. The only solution for this as said by many experts, is a north-south express highway, but sad to say no politician in Kerala has the spine to implement this project as it will involve massive rehabilitation.

I know..I have been to Kerala..
People has the same anti-change mindset as in Bengal
but Kerala is a well developed state..The people enjoy good living standard even though roads are narrow and industries are less
The poeple goes to middle east and return a lot of money to Kerala..
And Bengal ??
nothing like that happends
So Bengal languish at the bottom...
You know.. the lergest no of workers here are unorganised workforce
People occupy roads, medians , footpaths and open stalls
Bloody hell..
You find beggarsd in buses..hawkers in buses and they have poltiical affiliation
Kerala on the other hand is better
the people are rich and healtcare is far far better..
Mindset wise both Bengalis and Mallus are same..
Anti-Change

the point about convincing Mamata for nuclear energy is a non-issue

she has an anti-industry attitude..
Because of her even highway widening has become issues as people are not willing to give up land

And they know that they have the backing of her party

the issue of Bengal is land..
Free or Fallow land is scarce here ..So no new industry..

That is not an excuse, a lot of country has the same problem, like bangladesh, but there is progression of new industry

In West Bengal .. fallow land is just 1-2%..
So when private land is taken even for railway development, highway development or power plant development .. it is violetly opposed..

Google Singur, Nandigram, Haripur, Katwa.. and a lot many such occurences..
Industrial development has stopped in Bengal due to lack of land

even ongoing projects are facing difficulties
Industries are fleeing West Bengal..just because people do not want to give up land
And Government is OK with that

Then take the 98% of the unfallow and for development

You read the first sentence and did not read the second sentence

pople are not giving up private land.. there is no land available other than private land

People are violently opposing it

Just becoz ppl oppose giving up their land does not mean u give in to their demands.

Of course ppl are gonna oppose when you take away their lands, but in order to develop you have to have some sacrifices as well.

Bangladesh also forced people out of a few areas due to development.

sorry didnt have time to read the thread!! Will russia provide radio active fuel??? most probably yes.... My question is - is sufficient amount of polonium, uranium found in Bangladesh to produce bomb??

Most probably there are uranium deposits in bd, but i think its in small amounts. To make bombs you must enrich, plutonium. But i dont think bd has the raw material or technology to build a bomb.

But why would you want a bomb anyway?

Just curious.....

We are stuck between to states, one takes pride on the weapon of mass destruction, another trying to build it.....!

Exactly

and who takes the onus of convincing people to make the sacrifice
The political leadership

But Mamata is anti-industry
She said that if people do not want it then industry has to go away
She is anti-industry

that is what I am trying to tell you..
She is a populist who will do what people like
This has meant that industry has fled Bengal and its future is doomed

Hope you got it now

We should get FOAB from russia(if they are willing to sell it) to act as deterrence. Having nuclear weapons now will cause USA to choke us.

I am not suggesting for nuclear bombs.... I just wanted to know about our ability..... Because of foreign pressure, We even cant get long range missile as we don't have any threat!! Nuclear bomb is far away!

Wondering the security implication of nuke plant so close to border.

Do not worry about the secrity of this plant. Rooppur is located in Pabna district and is about 120 km north west from Dhaka at the left of river Padma. Read the news report below:

Rooppur Nuke Plant Delay pushes Padma afar
More land to be acquired to reach close to water for cooling reactors

The pillar marks the boundary of the Rooppur nuclear power plant site. The Padma flowed nearby when the project field was acquired in the 1960s. The river has now moved so far off (the horizon in the photo) that experts worry about uninterrupted supply of water to keep the plant's reactors cool.
Ahmed Humayun Kabir Topu, Pabna

In the four decades since acquisition of land by the Padma River for the proposed Rooppur nuclear power plant the river has moved away from the project site, jeopardising the availability of crucial water for cooling the plant's reactors.

The situation prompted the government to plan acquisition of 123 acres of more land between the project site and the current location of the river.

On Wednesday an agreement was signed between the governments of Bangladesh and Russia under which Russia will build the two-unit plant at Rooppur for Bangladesh, each having the capacity of producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity.

Soon after the project was initiated in the 1960s, 259 acres of land by the Padma River was acquired for the purpose, a section of which extended 300 feet into the river.

Ishwardi Land Officer Md Joynal Abedin said the river shifted its course around 2,000 feet or 700 metres away from where it was in the 1960s, and also became narrower with less water flow.

The project's Administrative Officer KBM Ruhul Kudus, however, said the river has moved almost 1.5 kilometres away from the project site.

As a preparation for the new acquisition of land, the district administration recently stopped leasing out a shoal which is now situated between the project site and the river.

Pabna Deputy Commissioner Md Mostafizur Rahman said, "A total of 123 acres of land including a shoal has been demarcated following an order from the science, information and communications technology ministry, and it is being preserved."

The demarcated land is owned by the government and will become part of the project, he added.

Considering the gradual fall of water level and flow in the once mighty Padma River, more land might be acquired if needed, said Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission ASM Firoz.

Water will be a must for the plant when it will be built, he said.

Russian experts already visited the site and conducted a study on the river to assess its possible situation over the next 100 years, said Ruhul Kuddus.

Additional Secretary to the Science and ICT Ministry Dilip Kumar Basak said, "A decision on the additional land acquisition will be taken soon after experts give their opinions."

The government hopes to begin construction work within its tenure. After completing the feasibility study, it will take around five years to complete the job. The estimated cost of the country's first-ever nuclear plant, however, is yet to be disclosed.
