'NTRO tapped 7.5 Lakh phone calls'

The National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) once again is under the scanner. A letter from a whistleblower inside the NTRO holds the agency responsible for illegally tapping into as many as a whopping 7.5 lakh phones.

Whistleblower's letter with TIMES NOW shows it is being brought to NTRO chairman's notice that how illegal tapping has been carried out despite the organisation not being authorised to monitor phone calls nor was there any reason given for this illegal activity.

Whistleblower's letter also requests the chairman of NTRO, PV Kumar, to respond and act to the revelations made in the letter which has highlighted NTRO's illegal activities.

The CBI,DRi,IT,all State polices combined tap around 100,000 phones a year whereas IB,RAW,NTRO taps around 2,000,000+ phones a year.

then what's the use of tapping then if they can't catch them ? I dont think RAW is being used to catch some petty theifs. What is needed is to thwart those attempts. If you are successful no one would point a finger at you.
Though, I am for giving up some privacy if that in any way will help combat cowardly acts like 26/11s in future.

For every Mumbai our intelligence agencies may have averted ten 9/11s. I sometimes feel pity for intelligence officers as their successes rarely gets mentioned while their failures make national headlines and they are criticized left and right.

please dont give that 95% success rate argument. Firstly, they are entrusted with the safety of public from external threats. that is their only job. They have to be 100%. Every such incidence causes a shock wave to go through the minds of Indian people. The magnanimity of such incidents makes it imperative to have 100% success rate.

Less importantly, how many of the people arrested are actually given the option of Right to be heard by a panel of jury ?

One more thing. Look at US. after 9/11 not even a single stray cracker had went off on their soil. That's called a superb job done.

I saw a discussion on CNN IBN after the recent Mumbai blasts, in which it was said that the state intelligence agencies are increasingly used as a dumping ground for officers who fell out of favor with the political establishment. State intelligence agencies are the primary source of information and if that itself is inept how can we assure 100% success. Not everything can be done by RAW or IB.

Well they can also thank their lucky stars that the Nigerian underwear bomber & the Pakistani New York bomber were lousy bomb makers.

You are talking about 2 million people in the population of more than a billion. I think when the new spy satellite will come before 2014 we will be able to tap more phones.
