Now Gates warns of leadership 'disconnect' in China

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates Friday said there had been signs of "a disconnect" between China's military and civilian leadership but stressed that President Hu Jintao is "in command and in charge".

When Gates met Hu and other top officials on Tuesday, Chinese state media published photos that were said to show the debut flight of the J-20, the country's first radar-evading combat aircraft.

The incident illustrated the Asian juggernaut's confidence and also raised questions about the role of its military, as a senior US defence official said Hu and other top civilians apparently were unaware of the test flight.

Gates, speaking in Tokyo on Friday, said "this is an area where over the last several years we have seen some signs of, I guess I would call it a disconnect between the military and the civilian leadership".

He said the civilian leadership appeared to be unaware of aggressive actions by Chinese naval ships in recent years, about an anti-satellite test and that there were "pretty clear indications they were unaware of the (J-20) flight test".

But Gates also stressed: "I have no doubt about the fact that President Hu Jintao is in command and in charge."

Two observations.

1) Times of India really is a giant turd of a journalist establishment.

2) Gates is going into overdrive mode on China issues as he is winding down his tenure as the def sec. While most people would agree Gates has done very very well as the def sec. on middle east issues, most people would also agree he's failed utterly when it comes to dealing with China. He's realizes now that as the China's impact on the future grows, this might the stain on his legacy that will be most visible in the next century.

exactly i find it laughable that gates claims that the Chinese government seems some how surprise at the test especially when we all know that those picture HAS to have government support to get out in the first place and that we had live updates and all expect the live flight soon, in short i laugh at the idea that we armchair generals know more about the Chinese military than the government of china

That's I personally think what most Americans think haha... I am not stating a personal opinion and when I say most people, I mean most American people. I follow a couple of military blogs written by US officers and they think he's doing a "good" job, though given how shitty Rumsfield was, anyone can look good.

I guess he needed something to distract the public away from his intel and defense screw ups. He gave the green light to axe the F-22, cut back on F-35 and was left in awe when China flew the J-20 over his head. It is not the first time they got information about other countries wrong and looking stupid and it will not be the last.

If it happens in US, its called "plausible deniability"; happens in China, then it's called "dis-connect"? Haha.
However, there is still a chance Hu seriously not aware of it, not because his power is hijacked, rather the commitie is prep'ing Xi to take over, and they are volunteerily releasing some powers.
That's all.

If I were Gates, I would demand a meet-up with Xi instead. Hu will be history after 2012. Like wise, If Obama would win a second term, any US president 6 years into presidency has not much *value" in reality.
