This is for the first time the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to contest the national elections without the party being led by a member of the family of the BNP's founder Ziaur Rahman.

Khaleda Zia, who headed the BNP during the anti-autocracy movement in 1980s that culminated in 1990, led the party in four elections with two victories in 1991 and 2001.

Khaleda became the country's first female prime minister after the 1991 parliamentary polls and her govenment reintroduced the parliamentary form of government in the country the same year.

This time around, her nomination for contesting the polls from three constituencies was cancelled on the ground of what election commission officials argued as 'her conviction' in two graft cases.

The 1991 elections were the first polls that the BNP joined after the death of Ziaur Rahman, who was assasinated in a coup on 30 May 1981.

Khaleda Zia's brother Sayeed Iskander too joined the polls in 2001 and became member of parliament.

Khaleda Zia won as an MP in every parliamentary election her party joined since 1991. However, the BNP boycotted the 2014 general elections.

Tareque Rahman, Khaleda Zia's son and currently acting chairman of the BNP, had played active role in the election campaign in 2001, but has never been an MP.

Tarique, now in London and convict in a few cases, refrained from joining the electoral process directly. He has no chance of joining the polls soon.

Khaleda Zia lost her candidature as the election commission (EC) on Sunday scrapped all three of her nomination for contesting polls from Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 constituencies.

There were rumours that Tarique’s wife Jobaida Rahman and Sharmila Rahman, wife of Khaleda's late son Arafat Rahman, would return home and lead the party's election campaign.

However, neither Jobaida nor Sharmila came back, let alone collecting nomination forms. Sharmila also lives abroad.

Researcher Mohiuddin Ahmad called the absence of the Zia family members from this year's election process as a major shock for the party.

"The BNP has apparently come out of the family politics through this process," he said adding that this vacuum has instead offered the scope for making the BNP 'a real democratic party'.

"Now, it is up to the BNP whether it will grab the opportunity or not," he said.

Nasrin Iskander, wife of Khaleda Zia’s late brother Sayeed Iskander, who was expected to file nomination, decided not to join the last moment.

Khaleda’s younger brother Shameen Iskander also refrained from joining the race.

The only person, however, from the extended family of Khaleda Zia, who joined the elections is Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, husband of Khaleda Zia’s younger sister Selina Islam, for Nilfamari-1 constituency.

Rafiqul Islam’s son Shahreen Islam is abconding while son of Khaleda Zia’s elder sister Khurshid Zahan Haque, Shahriar Rahman is not active in politics.

None of the Ziaur Rahman’s brothers and sisters is alive at the moment. His younger brother Ahmed Kamal died on 23 November 2017.

It has been learnt that no one from Ziaur Rahman’s family remains in the race of the upcoming elections, scheduled to be held on 30 December.

Zia ur Rehman is the hero of Bangladesh.

Pakistanis love Zia and hate Mujib.

Zia spent most of his time in Karachi, Pakistan. He got education from Karachi. His Urdu was far better than his Bangla. He could write Urdu but could not write Bangla at all.

Mujib on the other hand was an alumni from Kolkata Islamia College. India has a special place in his journey. He hated Urdu language. He actively participated in Bangla language movement.

Unfortunately he was killed by army persons with consent from Zia Ur Rahman.

Why do you want us to believe in this BAL propaganda in the killing of Mujib? Ziaur Rahman was not then the Chief of Army Staff. He was the Deputy Chief. Zia was certainly not a part of the conspiracy to kill Mujib. Neither was Brigadier Khaled Mosharref, the Chief of Army Staff.

But, in order to destroy BNP, BAL regularly uses Zia's name to tarnish him and denies his contribution in the 1971 rebellion by the Bengalis in the PA. Note, he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh on 27th March although he was not a political leader. He did so when the political leaders failed to promulgate direction to the people. The main leader went to west Pakistan and the others to India.

It was Zia who braved to declare. PA troops were already capturing and killing the Bengali military personnel in the army, navy, air force and EPR (BDR/BGB). His promulgation caused the remaining personnel with arms to get away and start fighting. Had there been a total elimination of Bangali military people, there would not have been a successful initiation of freedom fighting.

With all his contribution until death, he is being framed by the notorious Hasina in all the conspiracies known and unknown.

Difference is that !

Zia was trained by ISI and

Mujib was trained by RAW :agree:

Yes he was . However his wife and children are actually villains of Bangladesh .

Stop spreading Awami propaganda please .

Zia ur Rehman is the hero of Bangladesh.
Certainly....just see what he did in 1971.
Thanks to that, he was a Major in 1971 who became a Major General by 1974..

Zia, who already by then geared to revolt against the government of Pakistan, was preparing to defect, and later arrested and executed his commanding officer Lt. Col. Janjua, revolted and broadcast the Declaration of Independence on 27 March 1971 from Kalurghat, Chittagong, which read:

I, Major Ziaur Rahman, Provincial Head of the government, do hereby declare that Independence of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Later on the same day (27th of March), a second broadcast was read:

I, Major Ziaur Rahman, do hereby declare the Independence of Bangladesh in the name of our great leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

I don't care about the conspiracy theories that some seems to believe. Zia ur Rahman is indeed a hero of Bangladesh.

Minus one good, minus two even better...
I am keeping my finger crossed.

Aah; such affection in her eyes for the biggest savior of Bangla people! Free entry and work permit for India inclusive..

Its very important you keep a working relation with your neighbor. We cant afford to ignore 1.4 billion people market next door from where we source a major portion of our raw materials. Besides we resolved all of our territorial dispute with them. There is no more major beef remained. I hope PK will one day make peace with the sub continent as it is not well accepted by the western borders.

It is funny how Bd's founders killed each other... that's because both were greedy for power.

Mujib was killed by BNP founder Zia's Army but Zia was not directly involved in killing. The killer confessed in interview that when they were going to kill Mujib and his entire family Zia gave them go ahead but said since he was army general he could not involve in such mission but if you want to kill Mujib and family then go ahead. He gave permission.

Zia was killed by another group of army officers who killed him because he was pro-Pakistani military ruler and he killed Mujib (indirectly) and actively participated in killing 4 national leaders of Bangladesh. Also killed several Mukti Joddhas.
The pro-India and pro-Mujib persons in Bangladesh army killed Zia.

No, they did not kill each other. It was rather India that pressed the trigger from behind the shoulder. India disliked Mujib because he openly asked the IA troops to leave without first holding meetings on the subject with his counterpart in India. But, I also believe India may not have been behind the Mujib killing.

Zia was killed because he was taking BD away from Indian influence and had already placed it in the Chinese orbit. It is Ershad and Hasina who are genuinely India-centric.

It was Ershad who orchestrated the Zia killing on behalf of India. General Manjur was very efficiently used by Ershad for the killing. And Manjur was killed point blank just after he was captured and taken to the Cantonment so that he would not reveal the involvement of Ershad through their common colleagues in the Dhaka and Chittagong Cantonments. Note that Ershad and Manjur disliked each other. But the latter was used by Ershad.
