As an Indian living in India, the experience is rather 'institutionalised' into the being (to borrow a word from the MBA lexicon). So it is neither incredible nor mundane.

India used to be known as the wisest and most peaceful country in the world.

The world guru of wisdom and peace.

India's reputation today, really hit bottom.

All the ancient wisdom seems to be entirely evaporated from society.

Used to be known? When? by whom?

Even the most primitive African country can be described in such way "peaceful, wise, beautiful blah blah" in the eyes of poetic writers, especially when that country is a darling of the West (even the filthy, full of slum Saigon was called the Pearl of the Far East by Westerner). People who are stupid enough will believe these trashes.
