NK Seeks Revision of 1961 Defense Treaty With China

MARCH 04, 2010 08:46
North Korea is known to have proposed to China the revision of a bilateral cooperation treaty in talks on a breakthrough in international sanctions following Pyongyang’s nuclear test in May last year.

The DPRK-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance was signed in July 1961 and remains valid unless one side agrees to a revision or abolishment.

A clause guarantees automatic intervention if one of the signatories is attacked by a country or allied countries.

The source said Pyongyang proposed to Beijing that the clause be changed so that one side can militarily intervene in the other’s war or in other ways upon request.

North Korea might also be seeking the revision out of fear that China could intervene if a situation occurs in North Korea regardless of Pyongyang’s will.

Kim Jong Il demanded the change to prevent Chinese "intervention" in the event of a political crisis, because Kim Jong Il knew Chinese to be a backstabber and didn't trust them.

wes should totally abolish this treaty,N.Korea will drag us to its war which we dont want to fight.

It would be in China's interests to fight another Korean War if we can end up in firm control over the whole Korean peninsula. Either the Kims or another Korean general can serve as China's local governor in the Korean peninsula autonomous region of China. Just like last time, let North and South fight it out for a little while and then enter in the middle with massive ground army attacks. It's time for Type 99G, Z-10A and WS-2D to finally see combat.

LOL.... thanks for the 2010 news and nothing came of it by 2012. We're still treaty allies.
So is NK regime's mistrust of China.

Indeed, it is in China's best interest to let NK fall and be quickly taken over by ROK government. A protracted war due to Chinese intervention destroys China's own economy as well as millions of North Korean refugees pour into China and the shipping in the Yellow sea is all cut off as the Yellow Sea turns into a war zone.

It would be in China's interests to fight another Korean War if we can end up in firm control over the whole Korean peninsula.
Since that is impossible, the best option is to do nothing and let ROK troops take over North Korea ASAP and end the war quickly.

Except your pathetic RoK army are no match for NK. I doubt Americans are willing to sacrifice a single soldier to unify Korea, in fact, they probably prefer a separated Korea because you guys are going to kick them out when that happens.

Neither Koreas truly has any sovereignty over military matters, so stop pretending.

Are you speaking from experience with either Korean militaries?

From my experience with the ROK Marines, I say the average starving and stunted North Korean trooper is no match for his better fed and trained South Korean counterpart.

I doubt Americans are willing to sacrifice a single soldier to unify Korea,...
We are in South Korea. Is China in North Korea? Or how about YOU? Ooopss...YOU are in safe and comfortable Canada.

The US would be glad to leave to Korea. No need to kick US out.

Neither Koreas truly has any sovereignty over military matters, so stop pretending.
So what? What you need is to stop pretending that the abomination call 'North Korea' will continue to exist. WHEN it collapse, China will be faced with a crisis so severe that YOU will be glad you are in safe and comfortable Canada.
