Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated several development projects in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi.
Modi unveiled the multi-modal terminal constructed on River Ganga.
The Prime Minister also received the country's first container consignment (post independence) to be sent on an inland waterways vessel. This consignment containing cargo of the food and beverage company Pepsico set sail from Kolkata in the last week of October.
"This is the first of the four multi-modal terminals being constructed on NW-I ( River Ganga) as part of the World Bank-aided Jal Marg Vikas project of the Inland Waterways Authority of India. The other three terminals are under construction at Sahibganj, Haldia and Gazipur. The project would enable commercial navigation of vessels with capacity of 1500-2,000 DWT on river Ganga," the release stated.
"These projects are living examples of new India's new vision," said Modi after inaugurating projects worth Rs 2413 cr in Varanasi.
The Prime Minister also said that such projects should have been launched decades ago, but that did not happen.
Modi also inaugurated two sewage infrastructure projects worth Rs 425.41 crore in Varanasi and laid the foundation stone for another project worth Rs 72.91 crore for Ramnagar.
Modi was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari.
