It's been 33 years since everything made of steel in the Army had the same camouflage stained with brown, green and black. On Thursday, October 10, 2019, the Army Technical Section (STAT) presented to Satory the new camouflage of Leclerc tanks, VBMR Griffon, VBMR Serval or Tiger helicopters.
No more spots, but geometric shapes. Developed by a STAT Chief Warrant Officer, these forms create an illusion, a trompe l'oeil that is much more effective in the field. "A senior officer came to Mourmelon camp, and at 1000 meters, he could not detect the tank," he says. Evaluated and re-evaluated, this new camouflage is formidable: the detection time is eight seconds with a classic camouflage, more than a minute with the new one.
Ten times less detectable, this new camouflage gives us time to hit before being hit.
The black, finally too visible is abandoned. "It was necessary to change," says captain Arnaud, of the camouflage section of the STAT, because "the current camouflage was rendered obsolete by the sensors of detection and observation of more and more numerous and powerful".
The STAT also looked at how to do it faster and cheaper and has developed reversibility kit, plates adapted to desert or mountainous areas to be placed directly on the tank, without the need to spend days in the paint workshop. The change is made in two hours, in the field.
