Need not visit India & Mexico for cheap healthcare: Obama

With spiraling healthcare cost a cause of concern in America, US President Barack Obama on Tuesday pushed for affordable healthcare arguing that he would not like his countrymen to travel to countries like India and Mexico for cheaper treatment.

"My preference would be that you don't have to travel to Mexico or India to get cheap health care. I'd like you to be able to get it right here in the United States of America that's high quality," Obama said amidst applause at a community college in Virginia.

Obama was responding to a question from the audience on increasing healthcare cost in the US.

"Before we went on the path of you can go somewhere else to get your health care, let's work to see if we can reduce the costs of health care here in the United States of America. That's going to make a big difference," he said.

"And Medicare is a good place to start because Medicare is such a big purchaser that if we can start changing how the healthcare system works inside of Medicare, then the entire system changes. All the doctors, all the hospitals, they will all adapt to these best practices," Obama said.

"One of the things that we want to do as part of our healthcare reform package is let's start doing a better job of negotiating better prices for prescription drugs here in the United States so that you don't feel like you're getting cheated because you're paying 30 per cent more or 20 per cent more than prescription drugs in Canada or Mexico," he said.

Re-importation, he said, is a short-term solution that a lot of seniors are resorting to.

"But why should drugs that are invented here in the United States end up being more expensive than another country?" he asked.

"Well, the reason is, is because drug companies can get away with it here and they can't get away with it there, and we should change some of those systems to make it cheaper for everybody here. But that's going to make a huge difference in terms of reducing our deficit," he noted.

Americans need not visit India, Mexico for cheap healthcare: Obama - The Times of India

in the end he will run asking mexician to help them and ask indians to create jobs idiot.....beside all the hate i have against india ....... i adore indian progress in the field of medical

Mr Obama should have spared this domain at least.... Medical is more than a profession, Its like social service.. Free medical service or cheap medical service is service of insaniyat (humanity)..

Instead of all odd Pakistani brothers come and get cured at India. Neither Indian doctor hate them, nor the patient hate us..

If Mr Obama is willing to give cheap medical service to Americans, then its well and good, no one is stopping him.. But asking Americans not to go India and Mexico is really cheap...

I do not think what Obama said is wrong. The word "cheap" has several connotations and if affordable is the right word, why would Obama choose to use it when he would like to emphasize and highlight the quality of health care in the US. Though Indian medical treatment should go a long way in addressing the health needs of the whole of India, it is still heartening to see a brand ambassador for India in Obama. Indians should welcome this message as this is a surrogate advertisement campaign. Any advertisement and media is good media. Another million people in US will look at India as a possible destination for health care after his speech.

Make no mistake, health care is a booming business in India. Gone are those days when doctors looked at the job as social service. Today they are minting money and are flooded with pharmaceutical companies that spend a bomb to get doctors take notice and prescribe what they make.

A ordinary delivery of a baby today costs anywhere between 50 K to 2. 5 Lakh in an ordinary hospital with standard facilities.

Americans and Europeans come to india and mexico because they cant afford health plans and most of the treatments are not covered under their health plans...all obama has to do is offer free health care plans for every family in USA :P

The health insurance system in US is severly flawed. A doctor can be sued if he does not diagnoise a condition correctly and on time. Even if a doctor has a hunch , even remotely and in normal cases can be ignored, he will not take a chance and recommend further diagnosis, MRI scans, CT scans, X-Rays, blood tests, urine tests, etc. This leads to huge loss of money in diagnosis and money in tons is poured down the drain. This is in turn funded by health insurance whose premium sky rockets and puts it out of reach of common people.

Advantage India.

He can claim all he wants, but he does not have enough time to fix this... he has been losing popularity pretty rapidly and the election canvassing will start next year, plus the lobbyists will not allow the costs to drop that drastically to affect people from seeking healthcare outside of the US.
In current prices, the price differential ranges from 4x to 10x for most surgeries compared with India and most other Asian medical facilities.

Max he can probably negotiate with the medical facilities is a 20-30% discount which is not going to stop people from exploring medical tourism options.

India’s medical tourism sector is expected to experience an annual growth rate of 30%, making it a Rs. 9,500-crore industry by 2015. Estimates of the value of medical tourism to India go as high as $2 billion a year by 2012. Advantages for medical tourists include reduced costs, the availability of latest medical technologies and a growing compliance on international quality standards, as well as the fact that foreigners are not likely to face a language barrier in India. The Indian government is taking steps to address infrastructure issues that hinder the country's growth in medical tourism.

Most estimates claim treatment costs in India start at around a tenth of the price of comparable treatment in America or Britain. The most popular treatments sought in India by medical tourists are alternative medicine, bone-marrow transplant, cardiac bypass surgery, eye surgery and orthopedic surgery. India is known in particular for heart surgery, hip resurfacing and other areas of advanced medicine.

Ministry of Tourism India(MoT) is planning to extend its Market Development Assistance (MDA) scheme to cover Joint Commission International (JCI) and National Accreditation Board of Hospitals (NABH) certified hospitals. A policy announcement of this effect is likely soon.

The South Indian city of Chennai is considered to be the healthcare capital of India as it is home to some of India's best medical centers.
