BEIJING: A total of 492,185 international students from 196 countries and regions studied in China in 2018, the Ministry of Education said Friday.

The number increased by 3,013 over that of 2017, said a ministry statement. They studied in 1,004 colleges in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. About 60 percent of the international students were from Asia, with Pakistan, the Republic of Korea and Thailand ranking in the top three, the statement said. About 63,000 of them were sponsored by Chinese government scholarships, the ministry said.

According to Chinese media’s report, Pakistan has emerged as World’s top recipient of Chinese scholarships, as currently there are around 7000 Pakistanis, who are studying in China in their relevant disciplines in different Chinese Universities. Latest statistics showed that the highest of number foreign students, studying in China on scholarships are from Pakistan.

All these brilliant students are pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or Advance Training Programs at some of China’s top universities taking on a diverse range of subjects like medical, Computer Science, Technology, Business Administration, Architecture, Civil Engineering, International Law, and Journalism.

A record progress was witnessed during the last five years with the launching of China-Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC). This was also the result of vigorous efforts on the part of Chinese embassy in Islamabad.

Currently, annually around 1000 students are getting scholarships in China, most of them availing the opportunity directly from the Chinese Universities and the local governments,

Forcing 500,000 Chinese students to study abroad

I notice the number of Vietnamese students in China is in a freefall, reaching now a record low.
Most students study in chian because CPC offer them free tuition while making chinese pay. I don't blame these Chinese for leaving China eventually. Such an ungrateful government

China has increased the number of scholarships for Pakistani students to 20,000 per year. This was announced by Chinese envoy to Pakistan at an event organised to celebrate Chinese New Year.

ISLAMABAD: Stressing for enhanced people-to-people contacts to take Pak-China strategic partnership to new heights, China’s Ambassador in Islamabad Yao Jing Monday said his country had increased the number of its scholarships for study of Pakistani students in China up to 20,000 per annum - highest for any country in the world.

Speaking at a “China-Photo Exhibition” held at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), the China Ambassador said with enhanced people-to-people contacts and communication Pak-China relations would continue to gain strength from generations to generations.

“It is the people who matter in relationship,” he remarked.

The event was organized by the Chinese Study Center of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad as part of Chinese Lunar Year celebrations.

Ambassador Yao said the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was a long-term project, adding with five years of work on CPEC, it was just the start of achieving the goals of socio-economic development in the region.

He said that China, in consultation with the Government of Pakistan, had decided to enter the next phase of CPEC which would focus on Investment, Joint Ventures, establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs), engagement in the power sector as well as export-oriented cooperation.

The Chinese Ambassador said the second area of focus for cooperation in the next phase of CPEC was social sector and the areas identified were education, health, agriculture, poverty reduction and human resources.

“We have to have a holistic and futuristic approach,” he said and added that in future the cooperation between Pakistan and China would encompass all areas including military, economic, development etc.

Ambassador Yao lauded the efforts of NUST in various disciplines of education including the science and technology and said the Chinese government and Embassy would continue to support the institution, considered as one of Pakistan’s leading educational institutions.

Earlier in his welcome remarks Rector NUST Lt. Gen. ® Naweed Zaman, HI (M), observed that commitment of the leadership of two countries to preparing the future generation for “knowledge economy” through closer educational collaboration.

He also highlighted various initiatives of NUST to have enhanced cooperation and collaboration with China and its educational institutions and thanked the Chinese side for their support.

Later, the Chinese Ambassador opened the exhibition by cutting a ribbon.

On this occasion he was also presented a souvenir by the Rector of NUST.

The event was participated by the NUST leadership, Faculty and China educated Graduates Alumni of NUST and other Universities in Islamabad.

The photos placed at the exhibition depicted China’s great progress over the past four decades of Reforms and Open Door Policy to the outside world

Wow! 20k scholarship per year is a huge number for Pakistani students. I found in a xinhua article, in 2018 Chinese government granted 104 scholarships to Viet students. Can’t find the number of scholarships Vietnamese government granted to chinese students. Probably similar size. Not a loss for CN eventually.

Don’t know about Pakistan and other friends of CN but Viet scholarship students don’t receive much money from CN government. A handful Yuan to cover school fees.

The scholarship cover Tution fee + Stipend. I guess all other expenses like accomodation, travel, health insurance also included. Scholarship even provide Pakistani students a return ticket to Pakistan EACH YEAR so that they can visit family. Usually pakistani students even send back some PKR 20K-25K per month back home which is around 1000-1100 CNY.

BTW getting a Chinese Scholarship (For Pakistani students) is as easy/difficult as getting Admission in any other Pakistani reputed Institute.

That’s extremely generous by CN. Only top Viet students out of 104 pursuing doctorate or Master studies receive 3,000 yuan per month. That’s all.

I think that the Vietnamese students come to China is to learn more knowledge, not for "3000 yuan"
China is still a developing country, not as rich as Vietnam
So Chinese gov canot provide more scholarships to more Vietnamese students:(

I had a Chance to pursue my PG degree from a Chinese university, i guess it was 2200 CNY / month scholarship offered through my university, but the Chinese university that was offering this scholarship to our university students had a lower international ranking then the one i was/am already enroled in pakistan. So i didn’t applied.

I have a colleague from Pakistan. Previously as well, I knew one other guy also from Pakistan. I like their characters as they are honest, friendly and competent. Maybe in 5 or 10 years when we are getting better in economy, our universities can offer scholarships to young foreign talented people coming to VN to pursue their education.
