Navy ship catches fire in Chittagong | Dhaka Tribune
The extent of the damage could not be estimated immediately
The Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) Umar Farooq has caught fire at the Bangladesh Naval Base, BNS Isha Khan, in Chittagong city’s Patenga area.
Assistant Director Mohammad Yiahia of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters in Chittagong told the Dhaka Tribune that the fire originated from electric shot circuit at the kitchen of the ship around 2pm on Tuesday.
“The crews of the ship reportedly doused the fire soon after the incident.”
Receiving the information, four fire fighting teams from EPZ and Agrabad Fire Stations rushed to the spot. But, the fire was extinguished before their arrival, said firefighters.
Chittagong Port Deputy Conservator Captain Nazmul Alam said that two tugboats – Kandari 2 and Kandari 10 – were also sent to the spot.

BNS Umar Farooq is a Salisbury class frigate, naming after the companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (pubh) and third khalifah of Islam, Umar al Khattab, built in Britain and served with the Royal Navy for 18 years, before being sold to Bangladesh, joined with BNS in 1977.
The 103.5 metre-long ship can run 24 nautical miles per hour while about 200 personnel serve aboard BNS Umar Farooq with most living aboard her.
The ship is currently at Chittagong where she is used to train midshipman as well as to support operations at the coastal areas of the country, such as anti-piracy and anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue deployments.
BNS Umar Farooq joined in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 at the Bay of Bengal this year.
