Narsinghdi, Nov 2 (bdnews24.com) – The supporters of slain Narsinghdi mayor Lokman Hossain have set fire to a Dhaka-Kishoreganj passenger train, as a general strike is in force to protest against the murder.

Narsigndi railway station master Maron Chandra Das told bdnews24.com that the angry protesters set six coaches of the Egaroshindur Express on fire on Wednesday.

He said the incident occurred at around 10.15am on Wednesday when the train reached Narsinghdi.

"Many passengers jumped off the train at that time and were injured. We are working to douse the flames," the master added.

"A patrol team of the Rapid Action Battalion-11 went to the spot after learning about the torching and was pelted with brickbats by angry protesters.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, has enforced a 72-hour general strike in Narsinghdi to protest against the murder.

Shops and business organisations were seen shut on Wednesday morning. Activists of ruling Awami League and associate organisation have taken out processions demanding arrest and punishment of the assailants.

The organisers, however, said the first day's protest would not be that tight as family and party colleagues were waiting for the Hossain's body to arrive for burial.

"It will be an eased protest until 6pm Wednesday to facilitate the burial," said S M Qayum, a former central committee member of the student wing.

Qayum added that the Namaaj-e-Janaza would be held after Asr prayers when his body is brought back from Dhaka, where it underwent an autopsy.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to control the situation. Deputy inspector general (DIG) of Dhaka range police M H Nuruzzaman, Rapid Action Battalion-11 additional DIG Mostofa Kamal have reached Narsinghdi overnight to keep close watch on the situation.

Superintendent of Narsinghdi police Akkas Uddin Bhuiyan said, "A large number of law enforcers from Narsinghdi and surrounding districts has been deployed to handle the situation."

Doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) declared the 43-year old Hossain dead nearly three hours after he was shot by a masked gunman in front of the Awami League office at the district headquarters' Sadar road at around 8pm on Tuesday.

Lokman, also the ruling party's town unit general secretary, was a two time Gold Medal winner as Best Mayor.

Police detained Khairul Kabir Khokon, president of Narsingdi BNP unit, from the capital early Wednesday in connection with the killing of the district municipality mayor, Lokman Hossain.

Narsingdi police aided by a team of Detective Branch of police picked up Khokon from his Rampura residence in the city around 3:00am, local police officials confirmed.

He was later taken to Narsingdi under police custody, said Ashrafuzzaman, senior assistant superintendent (public relation) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Lokman was shot by a miscreant at the Narsingdi town Awami League office on Sadar Road Tuesday night. He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Protesting the killing, Bangladesh Chhatra League enforced a 72-hour hartal from 6:00am today.

But five hours after the hartal was enforced, local BCL postponed the strike till 6:00pm today in order to hold the funeral of Lokman, said Narsingdi BCL committee member SM Kaiyum.

The body of Lokman reached his Basail residence in Narsingdi town around 12:15pm. Party leaders and activists gathered at Lokman’s house to see the body.

Lokman will be buried at his family graveyard near Eidgah in the town after Asr prayers.

Meanwhile, BCL men set fire to six bogies of a Kishoreganj-bound intercity train ‘Egaro Sindhu Express’ in Chinishpur area of the town around 10:15am.

The bogies were ablaze at 11:15am when this report was filed as picketers barred firefighters from reaching the spot, reports our Narsingdi correspondent.

Several passengers of the train were wounded as they jumped off the burning train, Maran Chandra Das, Narshingdi railway station master, said.

Pickets threw brick chips on a vehicle of Rapid Action Battalion when a team of Rab-11 rushed to Chinishpur.

Earlier in the morning, the leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies brought out separate processions in the town.

Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway remained suspended for 14 hours till noon as the protesters put barricade in Narayanganj after hearing the attack on Lokman.

On the other hand, train communications on three routes – Dhaka-Kishorganj, Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Noakhali – remained snapped since 10:00pm Tuesday. The train service resumed around 5:00am Wednesday, which was disrupted again after the pickets set the train ablaze.

Contacted, Narsingdi Superintendent of Police Dr Akkasuddin Bhuiyan said additional contingents of police, detective branch of police and Rab have been posted at different strategic points of the district to fend off any untoward incidents.

MH Nuruzzaman, additional deputy inspector of Dhaka range, and Lt Col Mostafa Kamal, additional DIG of Rab-11, reached the district Tuesday night after hearing the news of Lokman’s death.

destructive nature of Awami League, even when they are in power. Local Awami League leaders explained in details why Awami minister for telecommunication has directed the killing of Mayor. But to deceive people and oppress opposition Awami regime arrested opposition leaders.

Here is the news from Daily Kalerkontho:

:: কালের কণ্ঠ :: প্রথম পাতা :: নরসিংদীর মেয়রকে গ&#24

We have to be reminded again about how politically motivated Awami regime use of legal system. Because just yesterday Awami regime arrested BNP leader for murder of Narsinghdi mayor. Slained mayor brother has sued Awami League telecom minister Raziuddin Raju for killing his brother. See the link below for the news in Bangla:

Interesting question.

The AL has a history of controlling and manipulating media.

In fact, the editor of current affairs for the Daily Star: Sayed Badrul Ashan is a diehard AL man. I once met him long ago in the UK. He didn't make his fondness of the AL a secret.

That's just one example.

Anyways, the main point is that every paper has some form of political connection which is necessary for their survival. Otherwise, they might lose their jobs or go to jail, especially under the AL. Living by their own ideologies is their own thing. But reporting and writing news is another.

Freedom of press isn't exactly strong in Bangladesh at the moment. And in fact, that freedom was stronger during the BNP administration.

But don't worry. The AL will succumb to their impending doom. All thanks to a deranged witch at the helm. Just like her dad, although not as ruthless and probably evil. The term 'evil' is a very broad term, which is why I used 'probably'.

Might be fair to say that the AL have evolved into fascists.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

DHAKA,Nov 4 (BSS) - Awami League presidium member and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Information Obaidul Qader MP today said the killers of Narsingdi municipality mayor Lokman Hossain must be tried.

Presided over by parishad chairman Rafiqul Alam, the discussion was also addressed by senior vice president of Bangladesh Krishak League Sheikh Mohammad Jahangir Alam and president of Bangabandhu Chetana Mancha Habibur Rahman.

"Our television channels are currently airing programmes in America, London and other parts of the world excluding India," the senior AL leader said.

Narsingdi: Two cases were filed early Friday with Bhairab GRP thana accusing over 500 unnamed people of torching 10 bogies of a train on Wednesday in protest against the killing of poura mayor Lokman Hossain.

Bright and promising Awami League leader Lokman Hossain, 35, elected twice chief of Narsingdi Municipality, was gunned down by masked gunmen in the district Awami League office on Tuesday night.

Outraged by the killing, local people torched the Kishoreganj-bound train at Bashail in the district town on Wednesday morning.

Earlier, a case was filed against 14 people, including Salahuddin Ahmed Bachchu, a businessman and younger brother of Post and Telecommunication Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju in connection with the killing of Lokman Hossain on Thursday midnight.

Quamrul Islam, younger brother of the slain mayor, filed the case against 12 Awami League and two BNP leaders at midnight with sadar thana police naming Bachchu as the main accused.

The other accused are Abdul Matin Sarkar, a former municipality mayor and former vice-president of Narsingdi district Awami League, Mobarok Hossain Moba, deputy publicity secretary of district AL, Montaz Uddin Bhuiyan, president of Narsingdi city AL, Nurul Islam, sadar upazila BNP general secretary.

Local Jubo League leaders Monwar Hossain Khan Moin and Hiron Mia, Tarek Ahmed, BNP district unit former organising secretary, Ashraf Hossain Sarkar, president of city Jubo League, Masudur Rahman Murad, assistant personal secretary of Telecommunication minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, Mia Mohammad Manjur, former VP of Narsingdi Government College students union and Jubo League leader, local AL leaders- Amir Hossain Amu and Mamun and Kabir Sarker, a Jubo League activist.

But Quamrul did not include the name of Khairul Kabir Khokon, president of BNP Narsingdi district unit, who was arrested from his Dhaka residence in Khilgaon area on Wednesday around 2:50am, hours after Lokman was gunned down.

Anwar Hossain, the officer-in-charge of sadar thana, recorded the allegation as an FIR first and then as a case in face of pressure by local people and direction from higher authorities.

DB police inspector Mamun said they will launch an investigation into the murder as necessary papers have been sent to them in this connection.

Govt’s crude partisanship over Lokman murder

THE response of the police to the killing of the Narsingdi municipality mayor Lokman Hossain, who was gunned down near his party office Tuesday night, and its aftermath, which saw leaders and activists of the ruling party and its student front, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, block the Dhaka-Sylhet highway and vandalise vehicles, and later torch several compartments of an inter-city train, has been marked by sheer double standards. Within hours of the killing, and even before formal investigations got under way, the police picked up a central leader of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on suspicion, although local people believe the murder was a sequel to internecine conflict within the ruling party. As it is inconceivable that the police acted beyond the knowledge and without the clearance of the home ministry, the arrest of the BNP leader appeared to be driven primarily by partisan consideration. The case filed with the Narsingdi police station by the younger brother of the late mayor on Thursday, which implicated the younger brother of the telecommunications minister and 13 others, tends to highlight such a perception and must have left a few red faces in the police and the government. It is all the more so because, according to a report front-paged in New Age, quoting the Narsingdi police officer-in-charge, the detained BNP leader is not among the accused in the case.

As for the post-Lokman Hossain violence and vandalism, the duplicity of the police—and, by implication, the government—has been even more blatant. While there has been extensive coverage by the media, both print and electronic, of the vandalism perpetrated by the AL-BCL leaders and activists in the aftermath of the murder, which culminated in the torching of the inter-city train, the police took more than 48 hours to file any cases. On Friday, the police eventually filed a case in connection with the torching of the train, strangely, against more than 500 unnamed people. It is hard to believe that, with the incident having taken place in clear daylight and in the presence of so many people, including even law enforcers, and after so much coverage in the print and electronic media, the police could not identify even a single perpetrator in more than two days. Notably, however, the police have hardly appeared either so shoddy or clueless as regards violence and vandalism perpetrated before or during the general strikes called thus far by the BNP-led opposition. In almost every case, the law enforcers were very prompt in filing cases and arresting suspects. Suffice it to say, most of the accused in these cases and the detainees invariably belonged to the leaders and activists of the opposition parties and their front organisations.

The obvious discrepancy in police action as regards the two incidents tends to suggest that the government is trying to protect its loyalists on the one hand and harass the opposition on the other. Simply put, it seems to be trying to make a murder case a tool to pursue its crude partisan politics. If so, the consequence could only be disastrous because it is likely to make politics more confrontational and, most importantly, leave the murder case unresolved. Hence, in the interest of political and social order and, most importantly, of justice, the government needs to stand back and let the police do what they should do—find out the killers, the arsonists without any fear or favour.
