It was the same case during British rule, hardly any muslims fought for independence, most of them were more concerned about that lame Khilafat movement to bring independence to the Ottoman empire, that's the only thing that got them out on the street, otherwise, they were perfectly fine with it. More concerned about freeing the Ottoman master than freeing themselves. To be fair though, the Brits did do you a huge favor. Towards the end of the 17th century, the Marathas were gangba**ing the mughals left right and centre. Had the brits not come, the subcontinent would be very different.
