Myanmar to 'take back' Rohingya refugees

The newly formed government of Myanmar has agreed to take back registered Rohingya refugees currently staying at two refugee camps in Cox's Bazar but made no decision on the large number of unregistered Rohingyas living in Bangladesh.

The number of refugees in Nayapara and Kutupalong camps is now 28,000 and the Myanmar government agreed that a large portion of the listed refugees are Myanmar nationals, said Foreign Secretary Mijarul Quayes yesterday at a press briefing at the foreign ministry.

Apart from the refugees, a huge number of undocumented Myanmar nationals are living in Bangladesh without refugee status, he said referring to the unregistered Rohingyas.

“Although they do not have refugee status, we are not forcing them out of the country on humanitarian ground,” Quayes said, adding that the Myanmar authorities have agreed to discuss the undocumented nationals.

The refugees at the camps had declined to return, he said hoping that they may have the confidence to go back now as Myanmar has a new government.

Bangladesh, Myanmar and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took a fresh initiative to return the refugees to their homeland, said Quayes, who attended Foreign Office Consultations held in Myanmar on August 25.

Both governments are in discussion to launch synchronised patrol of the common border by border guards of the two countries to stop fresh influx of Myanmar citizens into Bangladesh, Quayes said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to visit Myanmar soon to discuss this issue among others but the date of the trip has not been fixed yet, he added.

According to different sources, there are more than 300,000 unregistered Rohingyas living among the local population, in slums and villages mostly throughout Cox's Bazar district but also in smaller numbers in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The foreign secretary told the press conference that the huge number of undocumented Rohingyas was damaging the environment, creating social problems and disrupting our job market abroad.

Their presence is damaging the forests in Cox's Bazar and the CHT, and the social environment of the locality as many are involved in different types of anti-social and criminal activities, like prostitution and smuggling.

Rohingyas began fleeing Burma in the late 1970s, although the biggest influx was in 1992 when an estimated 250,000 fled to Bangladesh. Most of them were repatriated following an agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar with the UNHCR supervision.

These assholes always says the same but never implement!! There are 40,000 registered Rohingyas and more than 400,000 unregistered!! I'm sure even if they come ahead to take them back, only the registered Rohingyas will be taken away, that too with a genetic selection which will leave behind many from them!!

As long as Myanmar guarantee that no more refugee heading our way, I strongly support those Rohiyngia to be given BD citizenship and make them as our own. Just get over with it.

I disagree. They must all be sent back. Not a single one left behind.

At times I feel those old fools at the junta need to be taught a lesson or two.

I disagree bro, they do not contribute much to our economy, furthermore they are not self sufficient thus our taxpayers money is spent on them.

As mentioned by extra terrestrial, their population might increase. This might cause tensions between bengalis, tribals and them over the use of resources

Myanmer should be responsible for its own people

Hmmm.. Not a bad idea though. We lost a sizable chunk of the Chakma population to India during the insurgency (all because the terrorists would force Chakma children to enlist in their terror org.). Why not make up for this loss by naturalizing some Rohingyas. After all, they are another Indic Race.

I was just trying to be practical. As most of the Rohingyas already spread all over the country and they never registered as refugee, there is no way on earth we will be able to detect and send them back. Also they have a good support base among the locals in southern Chittagong. The sooner we could integrate them to the main stream, the lesser they will reproduce and the quicker they will start contributing to the economy. Its all good.

We have a huge shortages of labor. I bet if given opportunity, those hard working people will find jobs in Garments and in construction work in Dhaka. Besides a good percentage of them knows very good Arabic and they do extremely well in middle east. We could even send them to middle east in legal manner and earn few cents there.

That's not the issue. The thing is Bangladesh is a small country, with a huge and a growing population and limited resources. We just can't simply give free citizenship to foreigners. We have our own matters to attend to!

Myanmar has a lot of resources, they should be able to take care of their populations, including the various ethnic groups. I won't take the racist sentiments of those arrogant Burmese generals.

The Rohingyas have faced tremendous suffering over the 20th century. They slaughtered like animals by the Japanese forces during WWII and then again persecuted by the Burmese junta. They must be able to take care of their own people, and not simply throw others just because of their ethnicity/religion. Hell, they even persecute Karen peoples all the way to Thailand.

This is not only a Bangladeshi issue. This issue affects India and Thailand as well.

I hope our government resolves this other than handing out free citizenship!

We suffer man-power shortage? Are you joking?

You can say i am a liberal person when it comes to immigration issues but this Rohingya issue is very unfair to Bangladesh. The problem is with the junta government torturing their citizens, and the citizens feel safer here than in Myanmar. They have stayed in our country when the situation was bad in their country, but now when the situation is improving there is no justification to stay here anymore. We must keep in mind that Bangladesh is still a very underdeveloped country and 400 000 people is not a joke for us.

The thing is population switching from Burma to Bengal and vice versa has happened for thousands of years, there is no reason to put a curfew on it now. Having said that the Myanmar government should provide some incentive to these Rohingya population to go back to their country.

At the end, Myanmar government should make sure no such influx happens in the future and take back as many of their people as possible, but on the other hand it is not possible for our government in Bangladesh to trace these people and send them back personally, so i guess the best we can do is cope with the situation.

I hope you know their contribution in destroying the image of Bangladesh in the middle-east!! These cunts are just good for nothing rather good enough in creating problems!!

looks like Myanmar is changing it attitudes and changing the turn from military to democracy i guess lets wait and see
