Myanmar hands over abducted border guard to Bangladesh - The Hindu
Myanmar and Bangladesh reduced a tension over abduction of a Bangladesh border guard after Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) returned him, eight days after his abduction.
The abducted soldier was handed over to the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) on Thursday after a flag meeting at Maungdaw, across the border in Myanmar.
A seven-member BGB team led by its Teknaf Battalion Commander Lt Col Abu Jar Al Jahid went to the Myanmar town on Thursday morning to negotiate the release.
Razzak was abducted following what Dhaka described as a shootout on the Naf River at Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Jun 17 between border patrols.
The Bangladesh foreign ministry summoned Myanmar’s envoy in Dhaka and asked him for early action to secure the release of the BGB soldier.
Despite several calls from the BGB to its counterpart to hold flag meetings, the release was delayed due to indecision of the Myanmar government.
No information on the condition of Razzak could be known but two photographs uploaded on the BGP’s Facebook page showed Bangladesh soldier bloodied and handcuffed.
Following repeated requests by BGB, the Myanmar border police said Bangladesh will have to take in 555 victims of human trafficking, who the Myanmar claim were Bangladeshis, without checking on their nationalities. They were among the 727 rescued by the Myanmar Navy from the Andaman Sea.
Bangladesh has refused to take in anyone from Myanmar, who mostly are the Rohingya people fleeing the country out of persecution, without verifications of their identities.
