Mumbai: Editor arrested for reprinting Charlie Hebdo cartoon

Shireen Dalvi, editor of an Urdu daily newspaper, was arrested on Wednesday by the Mumbra police, for allegedly reprinting a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed that was originally published in Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly magazine. Dalvi was produced in a Thane court on Wednesday.

According to the police, the complainant, Nusrat Ali, had registered a case with the Mumbra police 15 days ago against Shireen Dalvi, editor of Awadhnama, an Urdu daily newspaper.

Ali alleged that Dalvi’s daily had reprinted cartoons originally published in Charlie Hebdo. A case was registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Four days ago, members of the Rashtriya Ulema Council, along with the complainant, submitted a letter of complaint to a senior police inspector in Mumbra police station.

According to officers, they threatened to protest outside the police station if the editor was not arrested.

“We arrested the woman on Wednesday and she was produced in a Thane court and released on bail,” said a senior police officer from Mumbra police station.

Masked gunmen had forced their way into the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris on January 7, killing 12 people and injuring 11 others.

One of the rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution is the right to Freedom of Religion.
Right to Freedom of Religion
Article 25: Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion
According to this right, every person is equally permitted to enjoy the freedom of conscience and the right to acknowledge, practice and spread religion. However, this right is subject to certain restrictions to maintain public law and order, morality and peace in the country. This article will not hinder the operation of any existing law or prevent the State from making any law. It will also not restrict the working of any financial, economic, political or secular activity which may be related to the religious practice. However, an institution run by the State is not allowed to impart education that is pro-religion. And also the right to propagate a particular religion does not mean the right to convert another individual as this will violate other individual’s right to freedom of conscience.
