Kolkata: The room in the hostel where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman stayed while studying in a college here 65 years back was Wednesday turned into a museum in the name of the founding father of Bangladesh.

A bust of Mujibur - the first president of independent Bangladesh - was also unveiled by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni before the museum in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee here.

The Sheikh Mujibur Museum would comprise the Baker government hostel's room 24 - where he stayed as a student of the erstwhile Islamia College, now called Maulana Azad College - and an adjacent room 23. Several articles used by Mujibur, the leader of Bangladesh's liberation war, have been housed in the museum.

An annexe building of the 100-year-old hostel was inaugurated during the programme and named after Bangabandhu as Mujibur was popularly called.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhattacharjee said his government would consider on a priority basis a request from the Bangladesh government for preservation of Mujibur's office which he had set up at Shakespeare Sarani in central Kolkata during his country's struggle for freedom from Pakistan.

Sheikh Rehana, daughter of Mujibur and younger sister of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is scheduled to visit the museum on Saturday.

@ So far I know Mujib used to visit Pakistan in those days and used to stay in the local hotels/rest houses so we shold approach to Pakistan govt to make it as museum.

@ In 1971 after releasing from Pakistan Mujib went to London and stayed at some hotel we should also convert it as museum ????? And ultimately make the whole Bangladesh as Mujib Museum.
