India Today's Mood of the Nation poll found that 43 per cent respondents believe that CAA and NRC are attempts to divert attention from serious economic issues like unemployment and price rise.

Issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed all-India National Register of Citizens (NRC) are attempts made by the Narendra Modi government to divert public attention from serious issues, finds India Today Group's Mood of the Nation poll.

The MOTN poll found that 43 per cent of the respondents believe that CAA and NRC are attempts to divert attention from serious economic issues like unemployment and price rise.

However, 32 per cent respondents said they don't think these issues are aimed at diverting public attention from serious issues, while 25 per cent said they either can't say/don't know.

A region-wise breakup of the response showed that 50 per cent respondents in South India consider CAA and NRC to be attempts aimed at diverting attention. The figures for North, East and West are 40 per cent, 44 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively.

The India Today Mood of the Nation poll also presents a religion-wise breakup of the responses. The poll found that 42 per cent of polled Hindus consider CAA and NRC to be attempts to divert attention from serious issues while 55 per cent Muslims believe the same.

THE METHODOLOGY

The India Today Group-Karvy Insights Mood of the Nation (MOTN) poll was conducted by Karvy Insights Limited. A total of 12,141 interviews were conducted (67 per cent rural and 33 per cent urban, and an almost equal number of females and males), spread across 97 parliamentary constituencies in 194 assembly constituencies in 19 states-Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

In each of the assembly constituencies, different starting points were selected, covering all the five zones of an assembly constituency: north, south, east, west and the centre. A fixed number of interviews were conducted, rigorously following the right-hand rule of household selection.

The fieldwork for the MOTN poll was conducted from December 21, 2019 to December 31, 2019. The survey followed random sampling. All interviews were conducted face-to-face using a standard structured interview questionnaire, which was translated into regional languages.

The poll was conducted under the supervision of Ranjit Chib, who is the chairman of Karvy Insights. He was assisted by Sachin Gupta and Debashish Chatterjee, both associate vice presidents at Karvy Insights.

Forget about world opinion. This is Indian opinion.

What was supposed to be propaganda against Pakistan by the Modi regime has turned into self-immolation. The protests against Modi regime are getting more extreme.

It was not supposed to be propaganda against Pakistan.

The CAA allows the thin end of the wedge to be inserted; refugees, or homeless persons, or stae teless persons originating from two and only two neighbouring countries who were NOT Muslims or Christians were to be given fast track and assured citizenship. Christians and Muslims were not; the government made great play with the Muslims who had been given citizenship in earlier days.

The next step was to be the National Register of Citizens. In this, as many as 19 lakhs of Hindus and Muslims in Assam have been ruled to be stateless, because they couldn't hand over the right papers. It is left to statistical extrapolation to determine how many will be excluded if the register is applied all over India.

This was to have been the point d'appui (in the military sense). From here onwards, battle was to be joined. All stateless Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists were to be relieved through the provisions of the fast-tracking mechanism of the CAA amendment; Christians and Muslims were then to be kept in detention or waiting a decision for years, decades, even perhaps their whole lives.

Not for nothing is the south and the east, and significant parts of the north and west, decisively turned against these wretched people.

I hope this regime stays in power for next decade in India, likes of modi, amit shah, yogi keeps doing what they are doing. This is Gen Zia moment for India... it's gonna haunt them for decades to come; probably they won't be able to survive it, if it drags a bit more longer. Phir aik baar modi sarkar...
