A state of emergency was declared in the greater Toledo area, where residents were told not to drink or boil tap water. The tainted water may affect up to half a million people.posted on Aug. 2, 2014, at 8:06 p.m.

Sports drinks and sparkling water are expensive so they are probably trying to get the cheapest replacements they can find.
 
The problem is only an overgrowth of an algal bloom in Lake Erie near the water intakes for the city of Toledo. This issue will be resolved relatively quickly, no doubt.

These blooms happen every year without any issues. This year the light winds reduced churn in the lake and produced a local overgrowth, that is all. No big deal.

New Zealand has that problem too in it's waterways.
