Metro News/ Hyderabad: Naib Subedar Patan Kumar Poddar, the Army officer who had fallen into the “honey trap” of a suspected Pakistani spy Anushka Agarwal and passed on sensitive military information to her through social networking site, was paid Rs 10 lakh for his “services.”
This was revealed during the interrogation of Poddar by the city task force police. Further investigation into Anushka Agarwal’s Facebook page showed that she may have been in contact with other Army officers, ranging from soldiers to high-ranking officials across the country.

Poddar was arrested on Wednesday after a well-laid trap and was on Thursday remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. According to sources, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) of the Centre has sought custody of the accused for investigation, as it involves smuggling of classified information of the Defence units to Pakistan. On Thursday, the police checked Poddar’s bank account for wire transfers and confirmed that it was active with wired transfers quite often. Poddar is reported to have admitted to the police that the woman deposited Rs 10 lakh in his bank account in exchange for the information provided by him about the Army movements in the Poonch sector (Jammu & Kashmir) along the Indo-Pak border. The police have reportedly seized Rs 3 lakh from two of his bank accounts.

n Thursday, officials decoded and verified e-mail and phone records of the Army officer, apart from gathering all the posts on his Facebook account. Preliminary investigation showed that Poddar had revealed information regarding 40 officers in Rajasthan, who were stationed along the Indo-Pak border. Poddar is also said to have shared information regarding deployment of some Defence units and spoke to a number of personnel at various locations and gathered information on the location of Artillery Regiments.Meanwhile, the Army’s Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME) on Thursday clarified that the Army man arrested by the city police on charges of espionage does not belong to EME.
