New Delhi: Security forces like NSG, CRPF and ITBP have turned their 'night eye' on to undertake special operations in Naxal-hit areas and along the country's borders as the government has recently sanctioned more than 19,000 night-vision devices for them.

The high-end devices, procured from public sector Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), include weapon mounted night-vision telescopes, night sights for rocket launchers, monoculars and binoculars and helmet mounted night vision devices which can be worn by troops.

The Night-Vision Devices (NVDs) are considered the most essential aid for security forces to operate better at night, with a clear vision of the enemy and other static targets. "The various variants of NVDs will give security forces deployed for anti-Naxal operations the much needed visibility in the dark. For special forces like NSG, they help the commandos accomplish a task with better precision," a senior Home Ministry officer said.

Describing the inventory of night-vision devices, he said 2,671 passive NVDs (monocular), 8,052 passive NVDs (binocular), 8,109 passive weapon sights and 203 night-vision goggles have been sanctioned by the ministry for forces like Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the elite 'black cat' commando National Security Guard (NSG).

While the CRPF is thick in action in Naxal-hit states, the BSF, SSB and ITBP guard Indian frontiers with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and China.

This is good news but what are MHA playing at? These 5 agencies alone total over 620,000 personnel so what logic is there in ordering only 19,000 NVG (~3% of total force equipped with these)? Possibly with NSG post-26/11 they have already received significant NVGs and these 200 are to supplement the existing stocks but for the rest of the agencies this is an utter joke.

CRPF:252,000 (+30,000 planned)
NSG:7,500 (being fair only~1/2 are CI operators, SAG)
SSB:85,000
BSF:215,000
ITBP:60,000

Political will (Sonia and her coiterie has nothing to loose) is lacking to destroy Maoists enclaves.
Yes but the majority of these are not for anti-Maoist ops- BSF are to protect the nation's borders as are ITBP and SSB and CRPF are deployed in extensive numbers in J&K as well. It's a lack of political will on the country's security establishment as a whole.

India may go to hell, what has Sonia to loose, she has Italian passport and billions to run away conveneintly, she will do Fujimori - A Peruvian of Japanese descent, Fujimori fled to Japan in 2000 amidst a corruption scandal, where he attempted to resign his presidency.

Most of the CRPF personnel are employed as regular policemen to supplement state forces in times of need - like during elections, huge events like cricket matches, riot control etc. The number of CRPF batallions battling naxals is only a small fraction. Of them the number of people who need night vision devices is even smaller, only the ones actually carrying out night operations need them. Do you really want policemen guarding election distrcits to wear NVGs? Looking at the number of personnel and lamenting the number of NVGs assigned on that basis is the work of armchair generals.

And it is funny that ANY issue can apparently be traced back to Sonia Gandhi and her Italian passport - which by the way she does not, and cannot have, since she relinquished italian citizenship to become a citizen of India. This seems to be a general malady among many Indians here, that any issue that crops up is an opportunity for Sonia bashing - it gets tiring after a while. No matter what you want to believe, potshots asides, she is not an emperor of the country and she is not in charge of every detail of the country. Jobs like assessing how many NVGs are required etc are done by military professionals - not by Sonia gandhi. So please keep this sonia-mania out of threads that do not remotely concern her, for the sake of an enlightened discussion of the topic of the thread.

Pathetic after 20 yrs...countless lives lost, incompetence to the highest levels, etc. Even then , we'll see if there is no hold up. Its easy for politicans to argue in Parliament, sitting cozy on lether chairs, driven around by drives, etc. but the lowly jawan suffers with sub par equipment fighting not just the enemy but just for survival. Pathetic....
