LAHORE – Pakistan should not promote trade with India until the Kashmir issue is not resolved. The people of Pakistan are fed up of the two party system and want change in political arena.
Rule of law is the only solution to the poor state of Karachi. These views were expressed by Secretary General Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Liaqat Baloch at Aiwan-e-Waqt Forum here on Friday. The program was held under the aegis of TheNation, Nawa-i-Waqt and Waqt News and hosted by Saifullah Sipra.
Earlier, Baloch called on Editor-in-Chief TheNation Majid Nizami in his office.
Criticizing the cabinets’ decision to declare India the favorite country, Baloch said, it would damage the Kashmir Cause and the countless sacrifices made by Kashmiris. It is the strategy of our enemy to deceive us through different tactics; he said adding that the neighboring country wanted to damage Kashmir’s Freedom Movement and to construct dams on our rivers. The solution of Kashmir Issue, he said, lies in the UN resolution.
Talking about peace in Karachi, the JI leader said that PPP, ANP and MQM were responsible for the sorry state of Mini Pakistan.
MQM was inventor of target killing, kidnapping, extortion and establishment of torture cells, he claimed. All the political parties, he said, should oust the outlaws to promote peace in the city.
Citing Wikileaks about the drone attacks in the Northern areas of the country, he said, they were fully supported by the Pakistani government. Answering a question about the US strategy in the South Asia, Baloch said, America might leave Afghanistan but it would not leave this region.OUR STAFF REPORTER

Pakistan backtracks on MFN: PM says status not granted to India

Backtracking on granting the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the Commerce Ministry has only been tasked by the Cabinet to move forward on the issue in bilateral trade negotiations.

His statement came three days after Pakistan Information Minister Firdous Awan announced following a Cabinet meeting that it has been decided "unanimously" to grant MFN status to India. Pakistan had been dilly-dallying on the issue since 1996 when India granted it the MFN status.

Since the Wednesday announcement of Awan, right-wing extremists in Pakistan and business lobbies in the country's crucial Punjab province have been vehemently opposing the decision. The business lobbies dealing with engineering and pharmaceutical products are of the view that granting of MFN status to India would be detrimental to their business interests.

"The Cabinet has only given its approval in principle to move forward on the issue (of MFN) and permitted the Ministry of Commerce, which is actively engaged in trade talks with New Delhi, to negotiate with it trade-related issues," Gilani told reporters at his residence in Lahore.

"We will give it the go-ahead if the situation is quite favourable and in the national interest. Otherwise, proceedings on it would be withheld," the Premier was quoted as saying by the media.

Gilani's remarks came even as his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh welcomed Pakistan's decision to grant MFN status to India but said it should have been done long ago.

With contradictory statements coming from Pakistan, its High Commissioner to New Delhi Shahid Malik Friday denied that Islamabad had taken a U-turn on granting the MFN status to India. "Let me correct you, there is no question of U-turn about it."

After the Information Minister's announcement on Wednesday, the Pakistan Foreign Office clarified that the Cabinet had only taken an in-principle decision on the issue and both countries would have to work towards the goal in further engagements.

The issue of normalising trade ties also figured in Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar's consultations yesterday with top military officials, including ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha.

Gilani said the Commerce Ministry would have to make important decisions independently in bargaining with India over trade policy and hence it had sought the Cabinet's go-ahead.

He contended the Cabinet did not have to refer decisions made on the MFN issue to Parliament.

"We can brief Parliament over the Cabinet's decision of going ahead with MFN, but according to my point of view it is not necessary. Only Cabinet approval is necessary to negotiate with other countries," he said.

Parliament would be briefed at an "appropriate time", he said.

Pakistan should never trade with India until the territorial disputes are solved according to just and moral principles!

Don't know why are they linking trade and Kashmir issue in one page.
Trade will help the people of both sides irrespective of political outcomes. It is a nice move from Pakistan side and I hope we will have a comfortable position for dialogues.

Will not giving MFN status bring Kashmir closer to resolution??.

Trade with Pakistan will remain minuscule(compared to India's other trading partners) even if MFN status granted... Pakistanis are still buying India goods(via Dubai) albeit at much higher prices.

MFN status or not we are growing and growing fast, it is Pakistani economy which is in a slump..increasing trade is more beneficial to them than to us..but seemingly they are content with their current economic state as they can not seem to come out their closet mentality to change it.

Perfect.

Since Pakistan doesn't have anything significant to offer anyways it doesn't affect India much.

Pakistanis can continue to bankrupt themselves without any help anyways.

IMF has already put a condition on Pakistan to cut it's military and government expenditure as a condition for bailouts; let's see how long Pakistan can last with no money no electricity :D

Do India really care whether they get MFN status or not? I don't see this as something of any significance to India. Had this been, they wouldn't have given MFN status to Pakistan in the first place without getting the same in return!!
