A hi-tech boom gate which prevents drunk-drivers leaving venue carparks will soon be installed at a licensed venue in Melbourne.

A spokesman for the Transport Accident Commission told 9News.com.au this morning that a deal has been struck to install Victoria’s first “alco-gate,” at a location yet to be confirmed.

The voluntary road safety trial, which will run for up to nine months, will put in place technology pioneered in Sweden to assess the blood-alcohol level of patrons leaving the venue’s carpark.

However motorists will not yet be forced to take the test, which requires the driver to breathe onto a small sensor which renders a reading in a number of seconds.

If the driver does choose to blow and comes under the legal Victorian blood alcohol limit of 0.05, the boom gate will open, if not the gate will remain closed.

According to a TAC spokesman, security staff will then be on hand to assist the drivers over the limit with parking and finding them a safe way home.

is drink driving a problem down under?

Not really, during the holidays drink driving does get higher, but we don't want it to get to be a problem, especially during the holiday's lots of families etc do road trips and Australia is one country where road trips are awesome.

In Australia, every life is important so the laws are very strict here.
