I think the point of the thread was not that Islam is the cause of progress, but that Islam and progress are not incompatible. The running narrative these days is that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with science, technology, and art. The anti-Islam crowd claims it for obvious reasons, but fundamentalist mullahs also preach that attention to worldy pursuits like science, art and technology is sacrilegious because it takes time away from worship. It is these mullahs who need to be countered.
