Masters degree must for Iran’s lawmakers

Tehran, April 29 (IANS/AKI) All candidates running for Iran’s parliament must have postgraduate degrees in future, the Guardian Council’s spokesman, Abbasali Kadkhodai, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

The new law has already been approved by the Iranian parliament and is aimed at improving the quality of the country’s lawmakers, he said.

National elections are due within 12 months and loom amid a mounting struggle between Iran’s Supreme Leader, 71-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Guardian Council vets parliamentary legislation and besides selecting candidates, it oversees presidential and parliamentary elections. It is also the custodian of Iran’s constitution and Islamic law.

we should learn from them

Wrong. In true democracy, you cant stop people from contesting based on their education. People are free to reject the illiterate candidates though.

This will lead to eliticism in their parliament and a rush to get fake degree.

I dnt think an illiterate should take part into law making

This is biggest reason for our backwardness

Biggest example is Bihar

During Lalu Ravri era they are in worst condition but now in present condition (Nitish Kumar an engineer) they are one of fastest growing states in India

If most people prefer illeterates even though they know they are, we cant stop them from getting elected.
An ordinary MP or MLA does not need expertise in anything, there are plenty of people to advice him. But he should represent the voice of people.
Ministers need to be literate, he also has the help of advisors.

Bihar would have been doing well if Nitish was any normal candidate with high moral, and smart advisor like MK Singh.
It is not that lalu did not know what he is doing was wrong, you dont have to be literate to know that.

There is no correlation between high moral values and education.
