The "R" brand, a high-end electric vehicle marque of SAIC, recently announced that its 5G-connected smart electric SUV, MARVEL R, will be launched on February 7.

The vehicle is the first mass-produced smart electric vehicle in China to receive a 5G terminal telecom equipment network access license and SRRC automotive-grade 5G/C-V2X terminal product certification.

MARVEL R has the necessary qualifications for commercial use of 5G technology and becomes a real 5G smart car that can be driven on the road.

It has 11 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and can receive the triple sensing system built by 17 5G V2X application scenarios such as traffic light information push, speed limit reminder, and stop and start guidance.

It is equipped with Mobileye Eye Q4H smart driving chip and Huawei Balong 5000 5G communication chip, providing arithmetic redundancy and reserving space for subsequent FOTA.

MARVEL R is equipped with 12.3-inch full virtual LCD instrumentation, which provides a hybrid virtual reality intelligent assistance system and AR real-world driving assistance system.

Users can not only open the sunroof through gesture control but also be able to control intelligent driving functions through voice.

MARVEL R will provide two power versions of dual-motor rear-drive and three-motor four-wheel drive, of which the three-motor four-wheel-drive version accelerates from 0-100 km in 4.8 seconds.

The "R" brand, a high-end electric vehicle marque of SAIC, unveiled its 5G intelligent pure electric SUV MARVEL R on February 7, which is the world's first electric vehicle with 5G connectivity.

The new vehicle is available in standard and PRO versions, priced at RMB 219,800 ($33,990) and RMB 239,800 respectively after subsidies.

SAIC said that the car is the biggest application scenario of 5G, and the advantages of 5G technology of large bandwidth, low latency, and high speed will realize the seamless connection between car and car, car and cloud, car and people, and car and the surrounding environment.

The launch of MARVEL R means that 5G autonomous driving is starting to move from experimental to practical, the company said.

MARVEL R comes with a 12.3-inch screen as well as a 19.4-inch screen, and the system uses the new Banma VENUS.

MARVEL R is equipped with the "DingTalk" app and can support 300 people online at the same time to hold 720P high-definition video conferencing, the company said.

The upgraded car system has access to MR mixed reality interaction technology. With the support of 5G cloud computing capability, MARVEL R will use AR technology to enhance the near-vision distance, improve the accuracy of navigation and driving safety, and build a dynamic driving environment of over-vision vehicles, roads, and maps with the help of VR technology.

This means that MARVEL R has added an intelligent gesture interaction function based on touch, voice, global Face ID intelligent face start, and other interactive methods and users can open and close the sunroof with a wave of their hands.

MARVEL R is equipped with Mobileye Eye Q4H chip and Huawei 5G Balong 5000 chip, equipped with "R" brand self-developed 5G intelligent driving system.

This intelligent driving system adopts SAIC's unique "vision perception + radar perception + 5G V2X" perception system, including 11 vision perception hardware (2 front view cameras, 4 perimeter view cameras, 4 surround-view cameras, 1 live view camera) and 17 radar perception hardware (5 millimeter-wave radar, 12 ultrasonic radar).

MARVEL R can get 17 5G V2X application scenarios such as red light information push, stop-start guidance, speed guidance, intersection conflict avoidance, etc.

SAIC said that MARVEL R will continue to improve the ecology of intelligent traffic information service (V2I) and safety warning service (V2V) in the future to optimize the connection between car and people, car and car, and car and everything.

The battery energy density of MARVEL R is 180Wh/kg and the NEDC combined range is 505km.

The "R" brand's charging map already has access to 250,000 charging piles from several third-party charging pile operators and is expected to have access to over 300,000 charging piles by the end of 2021.

The "R" brand also plans to build its own charging network and has opened an exclusive parking and charging service area in Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.

The company plans to build 100 of its own charging stations in 2021 to provide exclusive parking and charging spaces for customers.

SAIC plans to start exporting the MARVEL R to overseas markets and enter the European market this year. The model will soon open pre-sales in several countries including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Norway, and Denmark, the company said.

Nice.
Are they being used for autonomous driving in Chinese cities like Tesla or its all in the future ?
I wouldn't like to be in a Chinese electric car with 700 volts coursing through the body , in a flooded street during the monsoons.

You Indians are protected from this sort of lethal technologies. Relax.

The interior of Marvel R almost looks identical to SAIC Marvel X, which was launched 3 or 4 years before.

I was a bit disappointed to see this. I expected it could look more sexy, but the actual design fails my expectation.

I'm not saying the Marvel R/Marvel X interior design is not good. But I just want to see something newer/different.

For any Chinese-brand electric cars that are priced above USD 30,000, autonomous driving is now a must-have feature.

For the safety in rain, SAIC did a very interesting test in 2016 or 15. It put a battery pack, which is under normal charge & discharge, in a water pool with fishes inside. And the fishes were swimming like usual.

After putting in water for five days, the battery pack was disassembled (witnessed by media) ; no water leakage found.

Chinese mg zs ev sells around 100 units every month in India.
Its not about testing a test unit for quality but about having a robust system , which ensures quality in the production units.
China has to move from the shortcuts mentality to short term profits, to ensuring quality in its exports. Its not their yet. It has all the components just a attitude change is required. Poor quality from ignorance is unavoidable for anyone but poor quality from deliberate cost cutting is bad.

I like to see some buttons and a more traditional outline, instead of a plethora of screens. At least this could be tried in some models.

I think customers get what they deserve. For low-budgets, there will be shortcuts with acceptable quality - still better than India can ever make with doubled-up price tag.

You mentioned the concern on raining days; I showed your the proof of water leakage test. Then you shift to more general "quality".

OK, the general quality of the MG ZS. I don't have the quality data of its EV trim; but the quality data of its gasoline trim is available. (I guess it's because the sales of the EV trim is too limited; hence difficult to generate a meaningful quality feedback).

According to the car buyers' feedbacks post on autohome (FYI: autohome is the No.1 online auto forum in China), the PP100 (# of problems per 100 cars, i.e. the smaller the indicator, the better the quality) of the following models are:

MG ZS: 100
