Malaysia keen to build second Padma Bridge
KL tells Hasina during stopover
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader Thursday said Malaysia has expressed its desire for construction of the second Padma Bridge Construction Project as planned by the government, reports BSS.
"I am very much optimistic about implementation of the second Padma bridge project. Malaysian authorities discussed the matter with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her stopover at Kuala Lumpur on her way to Bali on Wednes-day," he told reporters while visiting the construction work of Dhaka-Chittagong four- lane highway in Daudkandi.
The minister visited three bridges-Kanchpur, Meghna and Gumti-on his way to Daudkandi. Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department M Abdul Quddus and high officials of the ministry were present during the visit.
Quader referred to his meeting with World Bank (WB) country director Allen Goldstein and said the WB is now positively looking into the billion dollar Padma bridge construction project.
"If WB releases fund for Padma Bridge Project, the government will start construction of the bridge without any delay," he said. Asked about the delay in implementation of the Padma Bridge project, he said, "I will not go to the past, rather I will take lessons from the past."
He expressed dissatisfaction over the fragile condition of some roads and said, "I will try my best to find out the reasons behind the road accidents and address the sufferings of the people."
"I have a plan to construct three new bridges," he said adding that before this, necessary steps would be taken to repair the old ones. "The Meghna bridge seems to be at risk. It should be repaired on an emergency basis."
The communications minister directed the concerned officials to install weighing machines on both sides of Kanchpur and Meghna bridges to check overloaded transports.
