Macron says NATO has suffered ‘brain death.’ Merkel rejects that assessment as ‘drastic.’

Quite amusing, given your original analogy. An analogy that equated a small debate within NATO on article 5 to be a definitive sign of the NATO alliance falling apart. But the Hong Kong and Taiwan situation blowing up in your face, the recent results in HK being a huge setback for China as a nothing burger. lol
The thread is about nato, an alliance, just in case you don't know what an alliance means. it's about issues between many member countries, if you like to talk about Hong kong or China's domestic affairs, many threads about them are running now on PDF.

Not defending your analogy towards NATO alliance no more?

As Nato turns 70, can this feuding global family patch things up?

The real question is, how did France come from wise and intellectual politicians like Chirac to populist rookies like Macron?

German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announced that Germany would reach a NATO spending goal of 2 percent of economic output by 2031, possibly blunting long-standing U.S. criticisms that it does not contribute enough to the alliance.
2% by 2031? I think Trump is right to say European powers have been rather too complacent and unwilling to spend even the basic amount they should have spent on their own country's defence. :disagree: This is even more absurd considering countries like Germany who is an economic and technological superpower. Trump is right on this one.

It's not just about Syria. France has been severely beaten in recent years. In Africa, the US is slowly taking the initiative or worst, China and Russia expanding in African-French hinterlands. On the other hand Sub-Saharan African countries withdrawing their assets from the French bank. In old-colonial areas, traces are quickly erased if you give an opportunity.

Macron dreaming an EU army without Britain and Turkey while blaming other NATO countries. Not only from Turkey, even United States bother to France. By the way, you're building a deeper relationship than anyone else with Russia.

When speaking about brain death, let me tell you a little story: In the mid-1960s, France withdrew from NATO's military wing and warned NATO forces to leave the country. Then US former Secretary of State Dean Rusk asked them: "Are the US' martyrs in France's cemeteries covered by this evacuation order? "

Merkel's political attitude showed the pragmatism of the German state tradition, as well as the fact that France was still pursuing the same empty dreams.

The question is how can Germany and France independent from America.

Europe is in the wrong direction to be united.
