Macedonia will change its name. Here's why it matters

So sorry. That cutlet is on my ignored list. Please carry on.
Slavic Macedonians are actually the closest relatives of ethnic Bulgarians. They speak the same language, just different dialects. This is why Macedonians usually get a Bulgarian passport once they apply. Nationalist Bulgarians are demanding a unification with Macedonia since the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Naturally, Sofia would oppose every move by Greece when it comes to anything related to a united Macedonia.

Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Greece - all three of them have a native Turkish minority which is why Turkey is involved in this dispute, too.

Macedonia and Turkey are very close allies due to our strained relationship with Athens. Türkiye always supported Macedonia in every international forum. We still are the biggest supporter of Macedonia's Nato membership while Greece was traditionally against it.

A very, very good article about the Turkish-Macedonian relationship:

Macedonia-Turkey: The Ties That Bind

To make matters worse, we have millions of Turks with Balkanic heritage in Turkey.
--> https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhacir

And these people have a strong lobby in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. They demand from the government to get more involved in Macedonia.

So if Skopje suddenly becomes very friendly towards Greece, things could get more complicated. Turkey is a supporter of Macedonia's territorial integrity. But we also have ~4.000.000 Turks of full or partially Albanian heritage. These people are traditionally supporters of Greater Albania which includes the Western parts of Macedonia, plus Kosovo and Albania.

1/4 of the Macedonian population is Albanian.

Bulgarians on the other hand always ridiculed Macedonians for denying their Slavic origins while at the same time Bulgarians themselves are denying their own origins: they were Turks before getting slavicized.

Don't get me started with Serbia's role, Greece' involvement, Muslim Slaves, Russia's interests, Europe's indifference, America's intervention and so on.

Welcome to the Balkans, foreigner.

Lol

I wonder what is actually the ethnicity of the Macedonia?

Why don't use it anyway?

Ethnicity is not something that a government or other legal entity can define and/or regulate. Nationality and/or citizenship is.

Under this agreement, the citizenship for the people there was decided to be Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia. With an explicit clarification that the citizens of the country are not related to the Ancient Macedonians.

It was expected,NATO officials have been very clear since 2008(Bucharest summit)that the name dispute with Greece is the only obstacle for joining the pact,as soon as it is solved the country would be immediately invited to join.
Poor Serbia. Totally encircled by Nato.

A Macedonian friend of mine is convinced there will be another war in the Balkans soon. As per him everybody wants to take over Macedonia (Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania) lol. Cant see it happening though if all parties involved are NATO members. Proxy Albanian separatist war is the only conflict I can potentially see happening if Skopje starts blaming Albanians for their mistakes now, as you earlier pointed out could happen.

Well it was their choice I remember immediately after democratic changes NATO was interested in developing closer relations with Serbia, but memories from the bombing in 1999 are still too fresh so they prefer to be neutral.

It is understandable, considering that in the last 12 years the country was led by a prime minister whose only political platform was that the whole world wants to destroy us and he is the only one that can save us.Meanwhile, during his reign we become the poorest and most corrupt country in Europe. After he lost power he was accused of embezzling millions,so he run away to Budapest where his buddy Orban gave him political asylum, protecting him from criminal investigations and prison(for now).
Most people here saw him as an idiot that he is but as you pointed out some still believe his crazy theories...

Interesting. Balkan politics is on a whole other level of confusion. Everybody seems to have a problem with each other .
