Hi ,

I am looking to buy a sports rifle primarily for marksmanship and secondary hunting.
Initially I was set on buying the Weatherby Vanguard 5.56/.223 because of the cheap ammo. Next I found the .308/7.62 nato to be slightly costlier and more effective for hunting.

Right now the guns under considerations are

1 Weatherby Vanguard 5.56
2 Savage Edge .308
3 Remington 700 .556 / 308

Additionally I would also like to get some opinions on the norinco SKS and the Mosin nagant

- thanks

just go to the local gun auctions in your area

if you lookin for good mix between marksmanship + hunting utility and you are not too experienced and looking for a reliable and comfortable platform -- i would consider the CZ-USA 527 carbine

What is it that your looking to hunt ?

The 3 selections you put forth are all fine. It would be best to try and see which one you like the most. I would say the same with the SKS and Mosin Nagant. I am guessing your looking at used surplus with those ? They can be a hit and miss but try going on hunting forums and seeing what opinions people that own and use then have.

You really can't go wrong with that 700 though.

Looking to hunt dear size game. There are some good deals at big 5 on mosberg 30.06 and 7.62 nato's.I read some bad reviews on savage edge so was kinda tilting towards the remington.

what do you think of the weatherby vanguard and the stevens short action ?
Mosin nagant is freakin cheap and fires a 7.62 x 54 round... its a lot of bang for 100 bucks and also its kinda cool collectible.

Like i said you really can't go wrong with a 700 it is one of those iconic models that have been around forever. Like their 870 shotguns.

The Mosin Nagants would be fun as would the SKS. You can get them really cheap but because they are used/surplused your going to have to make sure you get a good one. You can find a bunch forums dedicated to both to get some info on what you need to look for and such.

I would love to buy an SKS, i keep hearing its a chep rifle but i fail to find anything below 450 plus tax whereas mosin nagants are around 150-200$, also for SKS, which should i prefer the yugo or norinco. the russian are barely available in ca

Sandy,

Which place would you go out hunting deer in the u s----when I did many a years ago in utah----most of the shots I took were within 15 yds----one shot was at 35 to 50 yds----remember---on the first day of the hunt----the deer are normally right next to the all wheel drive trail-----yes---even the deer walk the dirt roads rather than the brush---.

Enjoy your rifle.

thanks , I am planning mostly around zones in southern Cali, Santa barbara estates up to San Luis Obispo. I am joining a rifle club now to hone my marksmanship skills now, then when I am confident , i would try my hand at hunting coyotes and deers.

and I will remember your experience to look near the trail. thanks mastankhan

Hi,

If you have been a shooter--then you know what to do----but if not---then start without a scope---then move onto the scope----but even before you do that---have you ever used an air rifle----that is the best thing to staighten you aim---. Even though, both are diferent---the air rifle give stability to your hands----.

I myself use an RWS 350 MAGNUM .22 AIR RIFLE----for practise.

I started shooting first when I was in school in National Cadet corps (Indian ROTC equivalent) later my family owned a .22 sporter OFB which sucked, when i came to US started with hand guns in the local indoor gun range. For practice I use a Ruger 10/22 with a thompson scope, I have a decent shot grouping at 100 yards, this summer going to take it more seriously.

Damn, your air rifle must be a killer.. it nearly costs the same as my .308" rifle.... so do you have any plans of getting more firearms ?
