Life expectancy in India lesser than
Sri Lanka & Bangladesh

Lack of expenditure towards public health sector is the reason behind lower life expectancy in India. This is what Dr Vineeta Bal form the National Institute of Immunology (NII) opined on Monday.

Bal was in the city to deliver lecture on "Longevity and aging: How does the immune system deal with aging?" under the second professor Telang Memorial Visiting scientist programme started by Department of Biochemistry of M S University's Faculty of Science.

The researcher pointed out that as per 2009 data, life expectancy in India is even lesser than neighbouring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. While the life expectancy rate at birth in developed nations like Norway is 80.6 years and that at US is 77.9 years, in Sri Lanka 74.6 years and in Bangladesh 68.3 years, respectively.

"Both India and Pakistan have almost the same life expectancy of 64.8 years whereas that in Afghanistan that has faced much troubles as a nation is 47.9 years," said Bal.

"Although the life expectancy in India has increased from 43.1 years in 1960 to 64.8 years in 2009, we have not spent enough towards our public health system. Our infants die early and even as Food Security Bill is being placed in Parliament, we are not really secured in the front of food," she said, adding that although 'roti, kapda, makan' has remained the pet theme for decades, neither roti nor makan are being given due attention.

According to this researcher, who is presently identifying reasons behind decreasing immunity with age, pollution will play a major role in deciding life expectancy.
