LG Electronics will focus on beefing up its capability on fifth-generation (5G) network-enabled devices to solidify its No. 2 position in the smartphone industry here, the company said Friday.

The move comes after the electronics giant recently overtook its American rival Apple.

According to industry tracker Counterpoint Research, LG took a market share of 17 percent in Korea's smartphone business in the second quarter, up 1 percentage point from the previous quarter, while Apple saw its share fall by 4 percentage points to 14 percent during the same period.

LG had handed over the second position to Apple in 2018 but recovered it buoyed by increased sales of its 5G V50 ThinQ smartphone which accounted for 32 percent of all smartphone sales in the April to June period.

"Thanks to the expanded subsidies offered by mobile carriers and phone makers, 5G smartphone sales have seen explosive growth," Lim Su-jeong, a researcher at Counterpoint Research, said.

While Samsung continues to dominate the country's smartphone market, improving its share from 65 percent to 68 percent in the second quarter, LG is seeking to continue to improve its share with a new release.

The company will begin selling the V50S ThinQ 5G, an upgraded version of the V50 ThinQ, in October. LG recently acquired a certification for electromagnetic wave testing by the National Radio Research Agency with the high-priced smartphone.

LG received good reviews for the V50S ThinQ, which will also be sold as G8X ThinQ in other countries, during the IFA tech fair in Berlin in early September. The company said the phone comes with an upgraded dual-screen attachment accessory that adopts 360-degree free-stop hinge technology.

"LG plans to release the V50S ThinQ here next month. We will soon announce the price tag and whether the dual-screen accessory will be included as a bundle or a separate item," an LG official said.

Kim Ji-san, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said LG is trying to cut its financial losses in its smartphone business after moving phone production lines from Korea to Vietnam and focusing more on premium 5G smartphones that are more profitable.

"LG moved its phone production line from Korea to Vietnam to decrease fixed costs ― including employee salaries and building rent ― for its smartphones, seeking to expand its share of the 5G market in its product portfolio. This will help the firm reduce losses," Kim said.

Korean market share only
They will make big inroad into Vietnam. After conquering Vietnam they will march - on into other markets. Huawei is dead on foreign markets. That is the big chance for LG. I hope Vietnamese smartphone makers will take some of the market share of Huawei though.

Can you post the stats of market shares chinese smartphone makers had 5 years ago?
Nothing stays static for ever!

If you say so, then you really don't understand this industry. Smart Phone industry is mature, which means less and less opportunities for new comers.

LG is not new comers, but LG is losing competitive advantage otherwise they will not lose so much market.

Besides, when an industry mature, number one and number two make money, number 3 barely survive, number 4-5 dying.

LG has little chance.
Smartphone Shipments: Apple Down 12%, LG Down 18.5%, Samsung And Huawei Both Up

Huawei grew 4.6% in spite of the U.S. government's attempts to limit its market share, while Xiaomi edged up .9% and Vivo grew 2.1%.

“Heavy marketing, faster portfolio refresh, high spec devices at aggressive prices, and multi-channel presence are some of the key reasons why Chinese brands fared better than the local and global OEMs," says Varun Mishra, Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research. "These brands have been aggressively expanding outside China and achieving growth offsetting the saturation in their home market. Their strategies and product portfolios are more aligned to the local needs and preferences, which is one of their key strengths.”

Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung, however, grew the most. Samsung shipped 76.6 million smartphones in the quarter, up 7.1%. That was good for one-fifth of the global smartphone market, thanks to multiple product launches and cheaper sub-$300 devices.

Korea brands have a huge fan base in Vietnam. In few years everything can change.

The world market is 2 billions shipments per year. How much Vietnam can provide to LG? Very little, and frankly speaking a low to middle end market. A smaller market than Guangdong province of China.

1/ 1.4 billion in total

2/ LG makes phones in Vietnam.

3/ China smartphone market shrinks by 10 percent while Vietnam rises by 11 percent.

4/ we don’t care of Quang dong!

1/ Smart Phone alone is 1.5 billions.
2/ LG ASSEMBLE phones in Vietnam by the way. Not much value added so far. I am not say it won't happen in the future,
