A debt-ridden Agra farmer has sent Rs 2,000 he received under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The potato farmer also sent a letter to the chief minister, demanding euthanasia.

Speaking to the Times of India, 39-year-old Pradeep Sharma said that he has sent Rs 2,000 to Yogi Adityanath and if the chief minister cannot help him, "he can at least grant me the permission to kill myself". The farmer also said that he is under Rs 35 lakh debt.

Pradeep Sharma said that he lives with his family in rented accommodation and has been struggling to make ends meet. He said that he has written to the district administration and state government seeking help after crop loss in 2016 but never received a reply.

"In December last year, I had gone to Delhi to meet Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh but returned empty-handed from there too," he said.

Pradeep Sharma said that he had brought the matter to the notice of the administration officials when his debt-ridden uncle died of a heart attack in 2015.

In December last year, a Maharashtra-based onion farmer sent his paltry income of Rs 1,064 from selling 750 kg onion to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a mark of protest.

"I produced 750 kg of onion this season but was offered a rate of Rs 1 per kg at Niphad wholesale market last week. Finally, I could negotiate a deal for Rs 1.40 per kg and received Rs 1,064 for 750 kg," farmer Sanjay Sathe told PTI.

Days later, another onion farmer in Maharashtra registered his protest against the farm crisis by sending Rs 6 to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

I am really shocked to hear a debt of Rs. 35 lakhs and If that farmer is expecting GoI to write off his debts then it just a day dream as any writteoff of such debts will encourage more to lined up.

Many times farmers barrow money or mismanage the crop loans and cry foul when repayment comes in. He should rather ask for rescheduling rather than writing off. In my place we have lot of such success stories where hardworking farmers have shown ways to get out of debt traps created by private financials or money lenders.

Farmers have taken the entire country as a hostage. While I understand that they are under a risk, so is every other section of the society.

This cannot keep continuing that the government keeps paying endlessly for farmers and always ask for waivers. This whole drama of debts after debts is now crossing the line.

Farmers need to learn to utilise their loans in such a way that they are able to repay the loan. Holding entire country's tax money as hostage has to end.

I hope Yogi grants his wish for euthanasia and the government auctions his lands off for a fair value to the other more enterprising farmers or those who wish to enter farming sector with new ideas.

Does the goverment sanction these loans? If yes; then this is just a predatory practice.

They do; and the farmers just don't pay back. I can understand during the times of crisis, but not always. I mean the rest of us are not idiots who work our behinds off to pay off all our loans to the banks.

This is why I don't appreciate these always-agitating type of farmers who take the governments as hostages using their numbers.

era of farming is long time over man now a company with proper tools and few employs can grow and harvest 100s of acres land . our south asian farming culture sucks i hate it .

TBH; if I were a bank, i'd surely not give credit to someone who would not be able to pay back. There is a certain risk threshold and that is calculated.

I paid my education loan by working my arse off, and similarly my dad paid housing loan by doing his business and it was never easy as he struggled a lot. Why should a farmer be given a free hand by govt writing off their debts, I'm paying my taxes directly and government takes indirect taxes on every screw and nut I buy. All for waiving off farm loans. If you don't want Rs 2000 fine, there are hundreds of thousands of people who want that, let them have it. As for this guy, he don't need government permission to die, attempted suicide is decriminalized so no worries if he survives.

Banks are forced to favor farmers by the governments. So, they can't really control it. You know, farmers who earn enough (say 8 Lakh p.a) need not pay income taxes get free electricity in their farm, and get many remunerations like Rs6k per annum. Subsidized fertilizers etc...

One who gets free stuff from government, would love to have it forever and will want more and more freebies. It's human nature.

My friend, the banks who lend the money are usually government owned banks or cooperative farm banks These banks have the pressure of the finance minister who in turn has the pressure from the party president and the PM candidate.

Private banks never lend money without taking guarantees. That's why you hear news of so many government banks getting screwed up here and then government has to save their behinds and arrest the scammers. Everyone in a government owned bank has this approach called "not my dad's money", so if they can make a quick buck out of any shady client or politically connected farming community member, they do.

This was initially meant for emergency purposes only. But later, farmers realised that if they agitate all the time. they will get away with anything. And since Agriculture is a massive sector in India, it has a lot of vote bank power - religion and caste vote bank is NOTHING compared to farmer vote bank.

While there are some genuine farmers as well who suffer, the ones who call the 'shots' of the farming community are a few bad apples up top. These genuine farmers also only support them so as not to be politically ostracized by their own working community.

Hence, now middle class is getting pissed off at all governments for waiving off loans after loans for farmers who think tax money is easy money. Soon, they will be made accountable as the middle class keeps growing.

BTW, farmers range from very poor to super super rich farmers holding hundreds of acres of land here.

These are Freebies provided by Governments who want to win voter with their populist policies which will eventually hurts the economy of state, best examples are Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal & Punjab.

I tell you beautiful story in my state Karnataka JDS (a Local party) announced 50,000 crores farm loan package to attract voters and they never thought they will win or part of Government. but due to voter's fractured verdict put JDU in driver seat and HDK (President of the party) become CM, after deliberation he eventually announced loan waiver package, initially he tried to implement package of 46,000 crores farm loan wavier but later found financially not viable as entire state budget itself 40,000 crores and later he split it into 5 year scheme so that he can make it financially viable by removing some welfare schemes.

In first year he tried to waive loan of farmers belonging to his parties constituencies (he made policies like that eg. applied only to sugar cane growers) but partners of Government opposed it as it will hurt them more. But now the CM has understood the impossibility of implementing the waiver scheme plan and reduced it to 26,000 crore package at 5 years term and as of now 2 years passed only 800 crores has been sanctioned and almost 200 Crores has been claimed or reimbursed instead of 11,000 crores promised.

This happened because earlier when he was CM he did the same trick and waived almost 30,000 crores of amount but did not reimbursed the money to the lenders like Bankers, Co-operative Societies or Financials which forced the states local banking sector to collapse and RBI had to intervene and had to merge with larger banks to protect the interest of common man or depositors or investors and this time bankers/lenders learned from the past experience and asked Govt to deposit money to bank before implementing the scheme. When he doesn't have the money then how can he implement it.

Even after successive governments loan waivers more than 10000 farmers committed suicides in Karnataka in past decade so waiving loan is not a long term solution. Instead, strengthening the farmers by different means eg. better MSP and better PDS systems and encouraging to grow multi crops which are less dependent on rains and inter-river linking to solve the water problems.

I paid my education loan by working my arse off, and similarly my dad paid housing loan by doing his business and it was never easy as he struggled a lot. Farm Loans should be given to those who repays it others should be not allowed to take loan once their loan waived just like lesser CIBIL ratings loan availability chances are less.
